What do I want from Canon in my next dSLR?

Automatic High Dynamic Range (AHDR) Mode

- In AHDR four frames are taken in "Continuous" drive mode

- Each frame has a shutter open twice as long as the previous frame ( +1 f-stop)

- The aperture for Auto HDR is taken from the Av setting, and the initial shutter time is taken from the Tv setting (in other words, The initial frame is shot as if the camera were in manual mode.

- All other settings (White Balance, ISO, and Picture Style) are as last set

- After an AHDR sequence completes, the first frame shows in the temporary Review mode, but all four frames can be individually reviewed, one at a time by switching to Playback mode.

What should it take to get this implemented? The way I see it, all of this could be a simple upgrade to the firmware.

That's a good idea... I would personally like to see a pop-up flash with a "commander mode" like the ones on some of the Nikons.

How is this different from auto-bracketing except that you're specifying that it only darkens the scene rather than go both ways? Do you expect it to be put together in-camera? Unless I'm missing something, you can do this now with bracketing, just start in the middle of the exposure range rather than the low end.

Ohhh I see, you're not saying "I can't do this now" but "I wish they made it easier to compile HDR files"

I wish my metering mode could be in-viewfinder. Other than that, 5 shot bracket would be nice.

I want a really low price. Because otherwise I can't get it. I'm just a poor student.

Would be nice to have what Bob said. Another cool thing to have is a dedicated "HDR" mode. Just meter the scene and the camera will auto bracket 3-5 shots and automatically merge them together using the camera's software. No over saturated/cartooney effects, just a good ole perfectly exposed picture. I wonder why camera's haven't offered this yet...

A lot of other things I've read around the forums seem so possible to be implemented that it makes you scratch your head to why Canon hasn't done it yet...Are they waiting to see how the competitors do with their features before Canon goes ahead and makes an "improved" version?

Ohhh I see, you're not saying "I can't do this now" but "I wish they made it easier to compile HDR files"

Actually, if you read more closely, you will see that I am using "longer" shutter times for the subsequent shots - not shorter. That means each subsequent exposure is delving deeper and deeper into the shadows.

Part of the rationale' is to keep your concentration on that first shot the same as it would be in normal shooting - ETTR. In other words, the first shot, which understandably may have to be executed more than once to get it right, should be one in which the highlights are right on the verge of clipping or are clipping a miniscule amount.

Finally, the operator does not have to do any fancy thinking or calculations. All he has to do is place that first shot where he would place it were he doing the entire sequence manually. Besides, the bracketing approach tends to give you at least one shot that is always an underexposure. Who needs that and for what?

Another reason why this is better than auto-bracketing is that this scheme gives you 4 separate frames - not three, and they are all in the correct direction - drilling deeper into the shadows.

I do not make any assumptions about whether the merge would be in camera or not, at this time, but my first reaction to that issue is that I don't want to burden the camera with anything that may require substantial increase in memory or computational power.

My primary motives in this is two-fold. One to make it automatic, so that the user does not have to do anything more than a manual exposure per the ETTR guidelines, and two to make sure that the subsequent shots are captured as quickly as possible and using the shutter only. (I see too many examples of people doing HDR merges with improperly prepared images being merged and not enough exposure spread).

My suggestion is to learn to use the half-press to lock the AF and then re-compose for the actual shot, leaving the AF point selection at the center point alone - forever.

That's why I have laid this out in a way that I think can be done through a firmware only change.

A 100 % viewfinder at 1X final magnification.

Regarding HDR: I think it is relatively useless if you can't have HDR in a single shot, because with many shots it is impossible to take 2, 3 or 4 shots in a row that will depict exactly the same scene. However, there are cameras out there (costing a fortune, two arms, two legs, a kidney, a lung and an eyeball) that can do this already. Personally, I'd just wish extension of DR to 16 stops, that's all :) (ok, that is HDR if you process it right, I know :D).And of course, a standard file format that will work well with this :).

Kind regards, Wim

What I'd like from Canon in my next DSLR is a lot less stuff. They could get rid of a lot of these features that are designed to entice the P&Ser to upgrade.

First to go would be the direct print button followed by the pop-up flash. They could then remove White Balance bracketing and shift, Face Detection, and Live View (although I could see some value in that.) The CA mode could go, along with that Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction setting. (Why can't they just say "vignetting?") The HDMI output (or any video output, for that matter) is unnecessary. I'm certainly not going to show my unprocessed RAW images on a high definition TV...

You get my drift...

I agree 100%.

Really, what i want is a 30D with 1D mark II AF, and capable of 10FPS.

Do that with 10MP and i'd buy it.

Hmm... when you start removing those features, the prices seem to go up not down.
