Manual focus with a proper lens (i.e, a real focus ring, not the crap that's on 95% of AF lenses) is quite enjoyable. Since I have gotten into older, high quality MF primes, I love manually focusing them. I feel a connection with the subject, and it actually improves my photography. I enjoy the process. Also, the fact that I can get L-prime image quality from lenses a fraction of the cost. I do have a split prism focus screen in my 30D, which makes manual focus a lot easier too.
Good point here with the MF. You really need a replacement screen instead of the stock Canon one and having a ring with the proper size and throw meant for manual focusing makes a huge difference.
