New 37 megapixel dSLR from Leica.

What do think this will do to Canon's (and Nikon's & Sony's) higher-end FF cameras? The FF DSLR market is really getting interesting!

(note: sensor by Kodak!)

Take a note on what Leica says about the R-series at the end.

Sounds to me like Leica is coming out with a "better than 35mm but not quite a $50k Hassy" system... The specs (what little there are so far) indeed look impressive. I'll be watching this closely for sure.

There's a 1pm press conference by Leica - we'll know for sure that the deal is then.

EDIT: More info:

There are also rumors swirling in the Nikon cloud...

I think this would have more of an impact on the MF market than anything Canon is doing. Thats just IMO though..

Yes and no... MF has been and still is pretty expensive, especially with digital backs. If this system fit in between the two worlds, it might attract enough from either camp: those wishing for more from a 1DS3 and those wishing for something cheaper than a $50k Hassy.

Given the experience with the digital rangefinder, how many iterations will it take after introduction for Leica to get the bugs out? And how much will owners have to pay for the fixes?

^ The M8.2 offers a couple of "fixes" indeed, but also some minor updates. Many of which are available to original M8 owners (for a price). But indeed, it's got a bunch of "issues" all around, like the need for a separate IR filter and the price... ;)

Some more S2 porn (and specs):

"The S2 will retail at around 20,000 Euros (body-only) and is aimed primarily at fashion and commercial shooters who want medium format quality combined with a DSLR's speed and versatility."

Pretty cool, 30x45mm going to really push Imacon/Hassy etc to make true medium format digital backs for once. 20K Euros is pretty exorbitant, though. This camera is not really meant to be a competitor for small format DSLRs any more so than the Hassy H3D or the Mamiya ZD or the Phase One.

Actual transcript from marketing meeting, Leitz Camera, Germany

VP of Leica Marketing wrote:
We seem to have hit a slow point in new camera sales. Is there any type of camera that we know less about making than 35mm SLRs and rangefinders?

Maybe there is a type of camera that will have even smaller general market appeal and sell fewer units than an $8,000 digital rangefinder?

Why are Leica SLR cameras always so ugly when their rangefinders are possibly the best looking cameras out there (M5 aside)?

I suspect this will compete more with MF in term of resolution and price.
The price of FF dslr's with the 5DMII seems to be dropping down quiet a bit.
My guess is that this thing will be about $10,000 and I'd hate to think what those huge Leica lenses would cost.

In regards to, um, non-medium format DSLRs, it will be interesting to see what aspects of the S-series possibly make there way to a potentially updated R-series camera.

They did say an R10 was in development... And hinted at tech trickling down.
