night time football

Take the 135 and 200, and see which one you like best...

here is a nighttime HS football shoot done last week, with 5D and 70-200 f/2.8 IS +1.4 TC + Sigma DG 500 Super flash. I could have used additonal reach, but I don't own a 400 f/2.8.. sigh, Understand that with the 2.8 + TC combo, I am shooting at f/4 at the widest! Sunset on this game fell around Page4 of that gallery- you can see the sky changing in the background of each photo.

I was sideline crawling the whole game (and almost got run over TWICE.. LOL)

How much reach do you need to shoot dusk/nighttime football? I've got two games coming up, one at 5:00 and 1 at 7:00. For the 5:00 hopefully I'll use my 100-400 zoom. For the 7:00?

Also, any advice on where to stand?

I have pretty much the same question. And this my first time shooting any kind of sports. Too night my son will be playing his first game at 6 pm. We live in eastern Montana and I don't know what the lightting will be.

I'm using a 40D with a canon 100-400 zoom. So what settings should I use? I had thought about using a tripod with a remote switch. So please some body give badchess and myself some suggestions.

When I did it I shot with the 100-400 until the light failed, then switched to the 135 at F/2. The 135 was a bit short when they were way downfield. If you are on the actual sideline be ready to dodge, and you might want some fingerless gloves and a warm hat.

Since it is sports I'd imagine you want to keep the speed fast enough not to use the tripod (unless you are getting artsy).

I'd try setting the camera on something like 1/400 second and adjust the ISO upward to compensate for the loss of light as the day wanes.

I can stand right along with the team about two-feet from the out of bounds line walking along as the action moves up and down the field. Sometimes you can get fooled with a zoom lens as to how close the action is actually getting to you. I have never been mowed over however by any players, knock on wood....

When you can no longer focus on a player headed your way...it's time to MOVE
