I wonder if Canon is going to send out an upgrade rebate?

I personally don't like the 28-135mm lens, especially on a cropped sensor body, not wide enough. Many have bought the kit and sold the lens for just over $300 to get a little extra discount. But you'll have to deal with selling and shipping and what not.

The 18-200mm is a $700 new lens Canon just announced. I haven't seen any reviews of the lens but if you are looking for a one lens solution, then it may be fine. A cheaper and probably optically better option is to spend $500 for a 18-55mm IS and a 55-250mm IS lens combo.

If it was me, and I maybe upgrading to a 50D myself, I'd just get the body only and buy only the lenses I want.

BTW, I think B&H and Amazon are great large, reliable sellers so you can't go wrong there.

Yea and if you look at the price for just the body and then add on $700 for the 18-200mm then it comes out the same as the price for the kit. So really...there is no good deal there....right? Am I missing something?

No, I think you are right. IIRC, the 18-200mm IS is going to sell for $699 so no real discount.

The absolute best deals you'll find on the 50D will be after the 60D is introduced... :D

Sept 27 - 28 only

50D body only $1305

50D with 18-200 IS kit lens $1845

Ordered my body from them Saturday ... supposed to come October 1.

The plan is to sell the XTi or the 40D, whichever goes first, and then keep the other as a backup to the 50D.

My reasons to pull the trigger on the 50D (I do landscapes and sports photos as my primary genres):

1) Micro Focus Adjustment capability
2) Increased resolution to print 13x19 at a setting of 240 pixels/inch with no upsampling (my maximum size print)
3) Improved Live View operation for my landscape work
4) Ability to use 3200 or maybe even 6400 ISO for sports/action, meaning my slow IS zooms can be used at one or two stops faster shutter speeds for same aperure and light levels I encounter
5) Much better screen resolution to check focus on landscapes and sports
5) Probably my last chance to get anything for XTi is now, before XSi replacement comes out and it goes two models down, and/or sales for 40D still happening, before it gets dropped when the 60D appears, and goes two models down
6) Too large an investment to switch to 5D or 5D MkII as EF-S lenses would become redundent and need replacing
7) 40D accessories (wireless and wired remote shutter releases, battery grip, extra cell) will fit 50D

Hard to believe you will get any deal on a system that isn't widely released yet.

It will take a few weeks before the deals start to show up. I'm guessing that at least through October and into November your not going to see much dealing going on. Come December and some retailers will start to lower their prices.

But I hope I'm wrong and the deal making starts early. :)

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Just be sure you check out the vendor on www.resellerratings.com (external link) first. The cheapest place is not always the best deal.
