Currently I have a 24-85mm lens. Its at the 85mm end that I feel I don't have enough rather than at the beginning. I sold my old 18-55 kit lens to get the 24-85mm. I have not missed the 18 too much. Therefore I think I should be OK. If I really need something wider, I could get a wide prime for it perhaps?

As for the Canon vs. other manufacturers, I'm just trying to see which will give me bang for my buck I guess. The lenses are not cheap, especially when your a student hehe.

For the bang for buck - here's another thought. You could actually buy two excellent lenses for the price of the canon 24-105L
1) Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (the f2.8, and short end very useful indoors)
2) Canon 70-300 IS or Canon 70-200 f4 (non IS) both about the same $$

This combo gives you greater range and good quality (but of course it's two lenses)

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually had a 70-300mm lens at one point, but I found that I used it next to never. I usually stuck with the 18-55. Therefore I wanted to get a lens that would have a wide variety and still produce good quality picture.

I think I will get the 24-105 and test it out and see how it works for me. Then go from there. Thanks for all your help guys!

24-105 is a top quality lens and you will not be disappointed with the images you can get from it

This is the only thread I've read so far, favoring the 24-105 instead of 24-70L.

I just sold my 24-105 and want to buy 24-70L. The 24-105 is a nice and sharp lens, with IS and longer reach. If it was f2.8, it would have been the perfect lens for me.

Now just waiting for the new Sigma HSM to come and if reviews are ok, might get that one instead, depending on price.

I won't be purchasing any more lenses for a while.

Whoa, that is what I said when I got my 24-105 15mths back.
Since then I added 2 lenses and another camera body....

I just bought my 24-105 about a month ago, and so far it's been an excellent walk-around lens. Much, much, much sharper than the Canon 28-135 or the Sigma 18-200.

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

- "Very good" is the enemy of "great." Sometimes we confuse the two.

Hi James, noticed you have the 17-55IS in your sig.
Do you find the 17-55IS overlapping the 24-105L too much?
As general purpose lens, which of the two do you prefer?
I believe you will use either lenses for different situations.

I really like the 24-105L and wish I had bought one earlier. I find it to be a great walk-about lens despite the crop factor on my 40D. It is really sharp (even compared with my 135L and EFS 60) and the image stabiliser helps tremendously in low light conditions.

When you say "low light' conditions, and sharpness, would it help in a situation like this??
Was rainy, and overcast, very woodsy- VERY low light, and very - very muddy!!!!

(BTW- alot of the shots were fine. SOME were not.. like this one)

That shot looks like both handshake and moving vehicles.
IS will help with handshake but not for moving objects.

So, is it safe to say, the Jeep MAY be still shaky, (unless panning???) as long as OUR Jeep is still??!! but the trees and the light would be better??

If your jeep is still, trees will probably not be so blurry. But light will not be better, as it depends on on your exposure.

If you are in a moving vehicle, shooting another moving vehicle and in low light. You're gonna need shutter speed of at least 1/500s.
IS helps with handshake, not much help when you are physically in a bumpy vehicle.

I have a XTi and if I were limited to 1 lens, it would be the 24-105/4. However, if I could have 2 lenses, I would choose the 17-55/2.8 IS and 70-200/4L IS.

Remember, you'll never have only ONE LENS!

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

I am in the same type situation here. :(

I have both the 17-55 f/2.8 IS and the 70-200 f/4 IS for my 40D. I think they are a great combo but, I WANT the 24-105 f/4 and realize that there's a bit of overlap here. Overlap to the tune of $1,000!

I WANT the extra reach that the 105mm will add over the 55mm but don't want to be hampered by the 24mm at the other end.
