Other?

To be honest I was unsure exactly what ACR was/is. Is it a free download plugin for PS3

I would not exactly call it "free" any more than I would call maintenance updates to CS3 as being "free".;)

It is part of the CS3 suite, but it can run stand alone if you are just running it as a RAW converter. In that context, it functions as DPP does. After RAW conversion, DPP files are often imported into Photoshop for final editing/filtering/sharpening/printing which is somewhat analogous to the way that ACR and Photoshop work together ... although with smart objects, the integration between ACR and Photoshop becomes much tighter than that.

I would have voted more than one also...

Also wondering why such a difference between LR and CS3's ACR... all things being equal, so should the images. Could it be a color management issue, or perhaps a preset is being applied unknowingly?

I tries to make sure all presets were turned off

I see quite a difference between CS3 and LR2.
They use the same raw converter however, so I would be curious for settings (and profile) used...

its the same engine but LR2 has a few more controls/options according to their marketing video

True.
But ACR can also do some things that LR cannot ;)

For one, ACR has a point curve (external link). (meaning: you can set points)

Also, and that's a big one IMO, the histogram in ACR is dependant on the color space used. In LR it is based on the internal LR working space (external link) (So you won't see clipping in sRGB space)

I'll give you the point curves, but LR2 has split toning and I see clipping in all my images when it occurs.

ACR has split toning if you are talking about the panel where color bias of highlights and dark areas can be set along with saturation and adjustable dividing point between highlights and dark color bias adjustment areas.

Apparently Rene edited his post, because he initially said split toning is something ACR can do that LR cannot. I was correcting him.

I use ACR. All that money I paid for PSCS3 i'm gonna use as much of it as possible. With that said, pre PS I was using the free "comes with expensive camera" DPP.

I still wish RawShooter Premium was around. Quite sure with the advancements in technology it'd rule the roost in design and operation. It always did work best for me with my 30D.

I said I wasn't sure about it ;)
Corrected at about the time you posted I think.

I had the panel turned off & forgot about that. It's late...

On the clipping: I'd very much prefer a histogram that shows clipping. I for one cannot see clipping in an AdobeRGB image, since I run into the limit of my screens gamut way before that of AdobeRGB...

I have used many of the ones on the list, however my preferred converter is C1Pro which I am surprised didn't get put on the list. The data is skewed by not having the right choices available. Other can cover these but C1 is one of the premier converters available, imo.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.
