I bought this 'lightly used' and it seems so. I have started using it and I would like to know if the peripheral weakness is a characteristic of the wide angle or if there is a problem with the lens. It seems most apparant on the left side of the picture and not on the right. I could understand how in a shot set at 11 mm focal length that the edges would be distorted but it does seem to be worse on one side. I have done no pp only in dpp I did use the lens undistorted button but the smearing on the left is apprant in the raw file. Looking through the lens on the camera you can not see the distortion. It is not as apparent in the photo below and much more so at 100% setting
******** may have answered my own question shot at F6 would it have been better at f 16?

I find with mine that for landscapes its best performance is around f/8 ~ f/13.

Well that image isn't all that much to go on. It does look like the horizon gets soft as you go to the right, though.

I loved the 10mm coverage of my 10-22 but did notice the sharpness was a bit off. I bought a Tokina 12-24 and instantly enjoyed sharper images but missed the 10mm wide angle. I eventually settled on the Tokina 11-16 which is clearly sharper than the other two.

You may have a bad 10-22. Or you may just need to stop down to f/8 - f/11.

Boy, that does seem strange. My copy is tack sharp from almost wide open even at 10mm.

If you must know...

The right side looks pretty bad there. Could be decentering.

That's really not a great picture for checking sharpness. Yes, shoot a smaller aperture.

The Canon 10-22 edge sharpness is probably it's weakest point. This is a great lens, the least distortion for an UWA, great contrast and great color rendition, but the edge softness is the compromise with this lens. The Sigma is sharper at the edges, and that's the 10-20mm's strong suit... in all other areas except maybe build quality, the Canon is better.

I will shoot a test image with the smaller aperture and see. If it is decentering how does that occur? Is it something that can be fixed? As I said a used lens although the glass looks great. I should have bought it new I guess live and learn. Will do some test and report back. David

Someone else had a similar issue on here, try a search. In the end they returned it and an element was replaced.
That definately looks soft on the right, but we need more shots to tell. I assume the lens is clean!??
My copy seems pretty sharp across the view even @10mm to be honest...

The focus still seems asymmetric to me what do you guys think? I am going to Joshua tree national park in January and hate to bring a bumb wide angle. The lens was bought as is used from Ebay never again. I will pay to have it fixed if it needs it but I am not sure that this is atypical for the lens

If you find significant softness and lack of fine detail on one side while the other is sharp at the same depth of field it's probably a decentered element and needs to be sent in or sent back. Yours doesn't look as bad as my first Sigma 10-20 but I was completely dissatisfied with anything less than good overall performance, and thankfully it was brand new when I purchased it and the company exchanged it with one that's equally good on both sides. I have learned not to expect too much from these early APS-C wide angle lenses around the corners.

form this is my first super wide angle and I am trying to see if this is normal for the lens. i don't mind sending back( well I do but I want a perfect lens) but I am trying to gauge if this is out of the norm for this lens

well, ok... now after looking more closely at the picture right under "I think shot at f 7" the right does seem a bit off. I take back my earlier comment. Send the sample pics and I'd send it in to Canon to take a look at.
