Xti here also... 2 an 4 Gb memory cards Shoot RAW unless there is some reason not to. Can't think of a reason though. Once you get the workflow for RAW it becomes more of a pain to change back.

I use RAW... I've got 16 gigs worth of cards in my bag, so space isn't as much an issue as I initially thought it would be.

XTi here, and I shoot RAW almost all the time.... I love the extra flexibility you have in DPP.

The only time I shoot jpg is when I'm using burst mode heavily. With RAW, you only get 9 shots in a burst before the buffer fills, which sometimes isn't enough.

Dustyporch: How long do you find it takes for the buffer to clear?

Usually about 2 seconds longer than I need it to!

Actually, I think the stat is that it takes 25 seconds to completely clear once full, but it does go incrementally... so at 13s its half clear and you can shoot 4 more, etc.

For most things, its not a problem. I've switched to jpg at the race track (car) because I would be panning a car down the back straight, using up the buffer... but then there is an accident in the corner, I swing the camera in that direction and.... nothing. Full buffer.

Shoot RAW+L here, that way I know I have more then one copy of the images to start off. if I need to use the continuous bust mode then I will shoot .jpg since the buffer can hold up to 53 shots, where as with RAW its only 9 or 10 shots.

I usually shoot RAW only. The only time when I shoot .jpg is if bursting is required or if it's work related.

Always shoot RAW for me. I used to do nothing but JPEGs but after I got a good photo editing program (Aperture) I never looked back. Ya, RAW files are huge but memory cards are getting really cheap and the quality of my PPed pics are so much better with RAW.

All of you mention that RAW gives you 'so much flexibility'. So what can you do with RAW versus a post-processed jpeg? Still a newbie here.

that's right you have the luxury of adjusting your white balance, picturestyle, exposure etc. almost on all situation raw is very handy

Many of the pictures I see, people are spending lots of time on their photos afterwards. Your thinking is like me, I want to spend more time taking pictures then tinkering with the afterwards (that may change once I get the new camera). I would be interested in seeing a picture or two that you have straight from the camera in JPEG format to get an idea of what they look like.
Thanks!

Sure, I just put some pics up of the red bull air race here: https://photography-on-the.net …php?p=6601015#post6601015

But remember they have been resized a lot to be able to embed them. The original pics are much larger and considerably sharper.

For JPEG right from the camera I am very impressed and it makes me that much more eager to pick up my XSi camera tomorrow!!!!

Yep, no editing or anything! Simply resized to 1024x... and compressed it to make it small enough to upload on this forum. The PQ of the true original JPEGs will blow you away...
