http://www.amazon.com …anon&field-browse=3017941 (external link)

There are many kits here and I am going to be a new DSLR user.
Will use for general purpose..grand kid photo's, outdoor photos, vacations and maybe some sporting events. I want the general lens and definitely a zoom.
Anyone have any suggestions for a kit. To many options in the kits for someone who is new at this. Price is a factor and want all I can get for the best price like everyone. Maybe someone has a better place to look. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dan

XSi with 18-55 IS kit and either Canon 55-250 IS or Sigma 70-300 APO. Note that you get 10% off the Sigma lens with the XSi on Amazon.

I got mine through Dell for $600 w/ Free 2nd day shipping (+Tax). I just did a search on www.slickdeals.net (external link) and all the current coupons have expired. They will have more out soon though. After I ordered mine there was a coupon that had the XSi out the door for $577.xx (+tax).

The XSi with 18-55mm IS and the 55-250mm IS are a very good combination to start with. You might find they do everything you want. Then all you need is a good SDHC card and your good to go. As you get comfortable with that you can see what you need to fill gaps in what you are shooting. Stay away from most of those kits they throw in a bunch of overpriced accesories that you would be better off buying seperatly.

I have the Canon 55-250mm IS and the Sigma 70-300mm APO as suggested earlier and the 55-250mm IS is much better.

Go slow and learn to use what you get before trying to get everything and not knowing where to start.

The 55-250 IS isn't really a good lens though from what I've seen in testing though. I would think about a Sigma or Tamron alternative.

Can you elaborate please?
Is this your own experience, or a result of reviews you have read?

I ask because the consensus view at POTN is that the 55-250 IS is very decent indeed.

That has to be the most ridiculous statement I've seen on POTN in a couple of months.

If you haven't purchased it yet, I think the 25% live cashback is still in effect. You can get XSi kit for about $467 from ebay.

Run away from that "deal".

Go here and follow the instructions to get %25 off.

Run away from this as well. Terrible ratings.

All of those deals that ssem too good to be true are just that: too good to be true. Stick to known places like B&H, buydig, Adorama, even Amazon or Dell. Avoid those package deals and just stick to the body and kit lens.

The bottom line is you're going to spend about 625-650 for the kit. Anything much less and you're likely getting scammed.

If you're willing to go the cashback route I mentioned earlier, you can pick up the kit for about 470 from Ebay. Basically, Microsoft is giving you cashback because they are trying to get more people to use their browser. The only thing is you have to wait about 60 days to get the money in your paypal account.
