I just got the 40D about a month ago. Great camera. Aside from the micro adjustment I just didn't think the 50D was enough to justify the extra $.

40D, the 50D doesnt have a good review compared to the 40D plus with the price difference....

So you trust whatever any photomagazin writes without go to the store and try it for yourself?

Yes the price is high but do you use ISO 3200 and up often?

Phil's feelings are probably hurt because when Canon announce a new camera once he didn't have a pre-production prototype to do a preview with.

Classic. Attack Phil, rather than the merits of the review itself. Do you have any evidence at all that Phil prefers to be able to use pre-production models and that the lack thereof influenced the 50D review?

Nikon D300. And I own a 40D. It's a shame that after more than a year Canon STILL failed to match the D300 in AF performance.

And Canon still does not have a VG that doesn't suck, or at least have the necessarry buttons for functionality.

The IQ and noise are 'almost identical' between the 40D and 50D, however IMO the 50D has a better feature set and is easier to manipulate as a result.

What did I buy - look at my signature :D

Hard decision to make IMHO.... 50D, better screen. 40D, cheaper.

I guess it would be 40D

If money were absolutely no option and you had all the glass that you wanted/needed, 50D. Best bang for the buck, 40D

Isn't it really a question of available funds? Or do people actually prefer the 40D over the 50D regardless of price?

I actually just upgraded from a 30D to a 40D yesterday. :) It's a great upgrade, and the shutter sound alone is worth it for me. :) For ~$600 after the live.com rebate I couldn't resist getting a brand new (gray market) body.

I couldn't find any reason to spend another ~$600 for a 50D. I'm sure it is better, but certainly not $600 better to me. (Please note the bold.) :)

For me it's the money issue. Not that I'm lacking money, I just have other things that I'd like to save up for instead of the 50D (35L, etc.). At 40D bodies going for nearly half the price of a new 50D, there are just not enough new features on the 50D to keep me interested. I've shot with the 50D, and it's a great camera. If someone were to offer me a straight trade for my 40D, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat, but as things stand now, for what 50Ds are going for, I'd rather take another $200 and buy a second hand 5D.

i had to contemplate this decision last month. 40D, and save money, or 50D for mirco af adjustment, and better LCD. I decided on the 40D, and can't be more happier. It does what I need, and more to come! :D

I know the price difference is a great thing in these economic times, but I go with the 50D. I have read all your "expert" comments about the 50d, but it still seems the best buy. Noise is not as bad as some of you report, and 15 meg is not too many pix for a crop camera. Some of you remind me of a friend of mine who will only use a Pentex spotmatic. If you are serious, it is the 50D. Think about it, is Cannon into losing their customers.

BHphoto now has an instant rebate on the 50D, you go for the 50D and you pick up a new printer and you get a bargain camera. Also do it with the kit for the 18-200mm lens and call your kit complete.
