I was taking some pictures in the shade at my school, and when I got back to my dorm I discovered that this cr2 file was messed up like this, part of the file is just a white rectangle, and I have no idea why... :(

anyone have any ideas about what it might be? Maybe just the CF card...

looks like there was a write error, or maybe part of the card is corrupt? or part of the hard disk that the file was written onto

I would guess it's the CF card.

What do you think I should do? Just discard the CF card and never look back?

CF cards are cheap but you can try reformatting it and hope it doesn't happen again. It could be something else too.

if your CF card was cheap I'd get rid of it now just to be safe.

I just took a ton of pictures with the camera in sports mode, just to run through a few of em, but none of the came out like that other one did. I had already formatted the memory card since I do it after each shoot, so hopefully it won't happen again. If I see a hint of a problem I think I will probably just throw it out because I dont want to lose everything one day.

I would imagine it was just a card error. I get them once in a while.

I had that same thing happen to me once with a cheap CF card. Reformatting did NOT help in my case. So I discarded the corrupt card and have always bought "higher quality" cards since then.

Do you format in camera? You should try formatting on the computer if you haven't.

The CF card probably gave up when it saw the backfocussing.

On the serious side, I have a cheap 1GB CF card that came with my camera. This happened to me before a few thousand clicks ago, except the error started much earlier in the picture, but it never repeated itself so I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I have a Lexar Pro 2GB card that occasionally messes up some photos. Not a white rectangle like yours but a bunch of green/white/black/magenta garbage on the bottom of the pic.

It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it's always on the same card.

So I'd just suggest you chuck the card in the garbage and buy a new one. They're cheap nowadays.
