Wow Robert,

Thanks for the compliment. Coming from you, I appreciate it. If you remember a few months back, my daughter complimented you on a fireworks picture.

This is my favorite thread. Subscribed. I have a single 550EX but I plan on getting it off-camera before I submit anything. The plan is either use a Beauty Dish or shoot-through umbrella w/stand.

I just ordered a stand, umbrella, bracket, and 15-foot PC-cord w/Hama hot-shoe adapter today from B&H... typical low-budget set-up. It will really help me learn manual flash and single lighting techniques. It will be here Thursday, so I'll be ready to post up my first shots!

Not so much a creative example but one strobe nonetheless.. was just seeing what i could get with keeping the background black in a small room with light walls (10'x15') with one strobe.

Need a shave and a haircut! lol. Was going to add a little colour to the background with a flexi mirror but i was too lazy to go get it and find some gel :/

No PS done apart from a little smart sharpen. Bare SB-600 (with small gobo on head to keep some light off the hair) high right behind subject facing left onto a large reflective white panel, another small white reflector on the left side of the face (camera right) for fill.

One more... I know the pose is a bit awkward, but I liked how the lighting turned out...

Here is one I took of my wife and 2YO daughter recently. It's taken in our front yard under a tree with a 580EX at full power bounced into a silver umbrella to the right of the camera. I didn't intentionally catch the neighbor's flag in the background but I like that it is there.
