I'd like to put a wide angle lens on my Canon S5IS camra. But Canons $150 price is too high for me. Yes, I know they say that's the best one. But, surely there's gotta be a wide angle lens that much less...and this is not an SLR, its just a point and shoot camera.

Any suggestions?

thanks....

Raynox is the only other brand I can think of that is not pure crap and might be worth looking into. I have no idea about the cost though. Might be as much or more than Canon's.

There's always the new SX10, but I saw your post where you didn't like the control layout. I really like my SX10 when I don't want to lug my DSLR around, which is getting to be more and more often.

You can find cheap ones on Ebay/Amazon but you are much better off saving some more money (if it's a money issue) and picking up the Raynox or Canon lens.

I picked up a Raynox DCR-6600Pro last December from 47th Street Photo for $99.95. It seems that the best price you can get it for at present is at least $140. Though with some further investigating, you might find a deal some place. There are some user reviews on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com …-Camcorders/dp/B000B75S9K (external link)

You may already have done so, but if you wish to examine its results in comparison with the other quality wide angle converter lenses for the S5, then check out this url: http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/A620A610wide.html (external link)

Since in using a converter you're shooting through two lenses, you invariably lose a slight bit of sharpness. But as you'll see in the comparison shots, the 6600 is the equivalent of a 24mm lens, with remarkably little barrel distortion in comparison with the competition.

Back up ;) The Canon looks to be the best bet. Too bad the new SX10 has such a slow lens or I'd buy on for WA!

Although I have no direct experience of it, you might find the Sony DH1758 wide angle converter to your liking. x0.7. Note that you need a second extender to allow sufficient space for the S5's own lens to extend its full zoom, but it doesn't sound like a big deal:

It's currently $96.09 at Amazon, the lowest price I've found:
http://www.amazon.com …tal-Cameras/dp/B0009OAFIY (external link) Amazon has a number of user reviews and there are others elsewhere. There may be sample images on the Lensmate site, though I haven't checked.

Good luck in your search.

I just discovered what probably most on this forum know already, that is, that of all the converter lenses for the S3/5 only the Raynox, not the Sony or Canon, have front threads to accept filters.

Just a quick note in reply. While I have the S1IS and not the S5, I do have the Canon Wide Angle adapter lense and am very happy with it. I have taken it overseas to Europe and it has given me very good results. My only complaint is that you cannot add any type of filters of any kind to them or even a lense hood. Having said that, you CAN add filters if you only use the extension tube that is required that you screw the wide angle lense into so you CAN use the UV,Polarize, etc. etc lense but you are only using the cameras original lense at that point. This adapter also doubles as a lense hood too. Now, maybe Canon has upgraded some of these things in the last few years, one would hope so, but as far as the wide angle lense goes, I am very happy with it and think the money is worth the added benefits. Just my 2 cents.

Do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life.
