Hello Jeremy! Those shots are looking pretty good! They are slightly grainy, but I love the perspective and your WB is right on in my opinion.

In looking at the EXIF, with that 85mm you could probably drop the ISO down to 1600 and still come in with a shutter sped of 500 or better. That way you'd lose some of the graininess(?) in the picture. Just a thought!

I shot a couple at practice this weekend, it was fun since the coach gives me access to areas I can't shot during meets.

Still chasing my settings, but I think I am getting closer.

Feel free to comment/critique.

I know I'm late chiming in, but these are very nice!!!

The Jury has concluded that Jeff1D has slipped by on the "really sweet shot" provision of the POTN Gymnastics bi-laws. The Forefathers of this fine board allowed for non-gym shots, but only in multiples of two and they were required to be smaller than other gym shots on the forum (they didn't want any upstaging by the other sport enthusiasts out there). They further stipulated that the images must be of such quality that they would be appreciated by even the most discerning of Gymnastic Photographers.

Congrats Jeff on some great shots! I wouldn't even know where to start on icehockey, but at least it wouldn't be as warm as most of those darn gyms!

Some stuff... but never enough!

Sorry, ha ha. I didn't even see which username posted that collage. I just saw the hockey pictures from you until you mentioned about the collage.

I have followed this and other gymnastic threads for some time, now. I have gotten a lot of help and my pictures are getting better. I now have the 50/1.4, 85/1.8 and 70-200/2.8 with an XTi. My question is can I get better AF with a used 1d mark 1? Or am I better off with a new 40D. I guess I can sell the XTi for $300-400 and trade up. The reason I ask is that I seem to get quite a few OOF shots due to low light and a fast daughter. Thank you in advance and I'll keep learning from you guys/gals.

Larry

Greetings Larry, The 40D has a better processor than the XTi has, and will give you better AF. The 40D will also give you a better fps than the XTi or the 1D MK1, and that is important trying to catch a fast daughter :)

just my .02
