The 400D has the same AF as the 30D.

So the 40D does have an upgrade over the 400D/30D then?

I'm not sure what your point is? We're comparing the 400D to the 40D, not the 30D.

It's supposed to have been improved, but I'm not sure if it was significant on the motorsport shots. It will take a little more time for me to decide whether my keeper rate is higher using the 40D...

I'm wanting to get into the digital SLR cameras, primarily for grand daughter's gymnastics meets. Of course this equals speed plus low light in funky gyms. I'm considering the 40D. I was planning on the 2 lens kit.

Any and all comments appreciated.

In a nutshell, yes. In practice, I've noticed more improvement under low-light conditions. If I am not mistaken, in the 40D, they are ALL cross-type. The 30D/400D has only one cross-type, the central AF point.

The 40D is the best jack-of-all-trades at a great entry price. If I had to choose only one body, I'd pick the 40D hands-down.

For gymnastics, you'll definitely *NEED* the 85mm f/1.8. If you can afford, the 70-200/2.8IS would be even better. The two kit lens are too slow for indoors (with bad light) shooting.

Ebann, thank you very much for the reply. After reading other threads on the forum I think I will try to buy used 40d and stuff to start.

Great site to learn from.
