Got to wait until Wednesday to do some real world testing. So far my indoor test is satisfactory.

Sorry blonde I wish I could have snatched up your 500L but that extra $600 I saved would buy me food and pay some bills. Good luck with your sales...

I don't understand why Canon will offer a f/5.6 version of their 400mm lens, but won't offer a f/5.6 version of their 500mm lens. Sigma is filling in a nice niche here. Let us know how good the AF is (my main hangup with sigma lenses)

Nice lens but not a walk around lens. No image stabilization. Definately a pod lens. It makes a great 'detective' lens.
Looks like sigma is picking up stock. Canon seems to be in a whirlwind downward spiral as of late with Nikon kicking butt.
LETS GO CANON ! wake up!

Yes, I know that it's a f/4.5 (I can see the pictures just like you). My point is Canon offers a more affordable option in the 400mm class of lens, but does not in the 500mm class of lenses. Sigma does, by making a slightly slower 500mm, at a price point more people can afford.

400mm F/5.6, is the longest range/ smallest F/ but still could use the 77mm filter.
Anything longer/faster than that requires filter size that larger than the standard 77mm

In which it would be expensive to begin with anyway.

I agree with you, and actually a 500/5.6 makes a lot more sense than the older Canon 500/4.5 or this Sigma.

The biggest advantage of getting all the way to f/4 is to preserve AF with a 1.4X TC on most bodies and with a 2X TC on a 1D.

Once you are slower than f/4 the TCs lose AF (only 1.4X works on 1D) and (IMO) you might as well go all the way to f/5.6 and take out as much weight and cost as possible. Going 1/3 stop slower than f/4 is like finishing in 2nd place by an inch.

I really wish Canon would offer a 500 f/5.6L IS USM. It should come in at about 1.7kg which would be awesome for portability and handholding.

And would cost way less then the f/4 version.

A 500 f/5.6 would be pointless, the difference from 400mm is small. Might aswell make a 600 f/5.6 instead.
