Yes, you need flash to compensate for the huge difference in exposure values for the sun and for the shaded side of the people. You expose to get the background exposure you want, and then you blast your subjects with flash to give them the exposure you want too. -Lloyd

If you tell them EARLY ON that you NEED at least 1.5 hours with the bride and groom in order to get some unique, dramatic imagery, then maybe you can convince some of your couples to allocate the time for you to work your magic. -Lloyd
