I've been lurking around and learning a lot from this forum. I got my XSI a few weeks ago and I'm loving it so far.

Hi, i got my 450D a few weeks back and have been lurking on the forum enjoying the great photographs posted and generally being in awe of everyone's ability.

I am new to DSLR photography and im enjoying learning the ropes. As a starter here are my 'duck' shots, taken this morning, unfortunately no ducks but im sure they were once ugly ducklings.

All photos other than the last one was taken with the nifty fifty, totally amazed with the detail you can achieve with this cheap lens, best £68 ever spent. Final photo taken with the kit lens.

All C&C welcome, photos shot in raw and have been cropped and developed in DPP but that's it.

Goodness! Were you in the water with the swans? I've never seen such close shots with a 50mm. They must be quite tame. Nice work!

I was wondering the same thing! That looks dangerously close! The swans around here get a little miffed when you get within 15 ft. of them. Beautiful photos to say the least! Nice work.

Thank you Brett & ckort for the nice comments.

The swans were in a pretty small man-made model boating lake near were i live and are extremely tame, they literally swim over to you when you stand by the lake hoping to be fed.

I have been hoping for a nice enough day over the holiday to go and photograph them and this morning was perfect, sunny, crisp & dry. The difference some nice lighting has made to my images is unreal, most of my other photos have been taken indoors or in poor overcast light and have lacked this sharpness.

I really like your first one, the colours are great. I'm not having much success with the kit lens so far but to be fair i have spent a lot more time using the nifty fifty, that lens is just too addictive.

Took this today. And before I get flamed for standing in front of a train, this particular train was going away from me ;)

Not the best picture, but the cool thing about this is that the room was fairly dark and I was just playing with my 430ex ll flash and was amazed at how well it lit my subject. Just bounced the flash off the ceiling.

I love these 2 photos! Very sharp and clear.

Newbie question: Is the nifty fifty the f/1.4 or the f/1.8? I would think the f/1.4 but you saying is was cheap makes me think the f/1.8

Thank you
