A metal/titanium camera would be cool, but silver plastic just looks cheap to me.

Becasue most point-and-shoot cameras are silver, associated with entry-level equipment. And as someone else said, it just looks horrid to have a silver camera with a black grip.

I've got a silver XT, and hated it. Just looked like crap imo. I even contemplated getting that black rubber body armour but they only made it for the XTi. It looked especially ridiculous with the 24-70L and hood.

I'm loving my all black 40D. :D

I think that my biggest problem with them is that they're plastic, which to me gives the appearance of plastic trying to look like metal. I don't really mind silver metal.

I have a silver plastic P&S and the silver is starting to wear off and show the different colored plastic underneath. At least with black plastic, it typically seems to be black all the way through.

After that, it became a fashion of professional photographers to have black-painted cameras, and the major manufacturers offered their pro-grade cameras in both chromed brass or black-painted brass...with the black-painted brass bodies going for $20 or $30 dollars more.

Yep. When I bought my Nikon F in 1969 it was available in chrome or black, with black about $50 more. So I got black, of course. :p

Because the black painted brass wore normally at the edges and corners, it became even further fashion to show the brass through the wear points (because of course professionals used their cameras heavily)...so much so that some amateurs who bought black-painted cameras sanded the paint of the edges of their cameras.

Heh. Yeah, it always looked fake too. Just like the squids who buy a new sportbike (motorcycle) and sand the edges of the tire tread to get rid of the sissy strips.

The Rebel silver plastic is silver all the way through I believe.

A silver camera shot my entire family.... since that fateful day I knew I could never own one myself.

Is it just the chimping silver P&S crowd that is causing the bad opinions?

I thought that it was all based on function.

Bodies are black so that they are less likely to reflect highlights onto the subject.

Big lenses are white to reflect heat (which makes the exact location of infinity focus shift)

And the red rim makes the focus sharper... :-)

this is the thing back in the day when canon launched the eos 50 it was silver in a proper build and it looked cool and vintage. the prob now is that they are to plasticky.... icky... but i say the same for the black models..... I generally think plastic suck and metal rule!!!! :) Id love to get the feel of my old Nikkormat back,,,,,

Its gray plastic with silver paint. Mt 300D had wear marks where you could see the plastic through the paint.

I had a silver XT too. I just like the black color more. Looks more professional to me.

Silver is OK, but just looks cheap IMO. Once you go black, you never go back :)

Well my Pentax K1000 which is 20 years old or so is silver/metal. Certainly not cheap. Built a whole lot better than nearly all dSLRs of today aside from weather sealing.

Pretty soon sony and olympus will come out with dSLRs in different colors just like P&S cameras.

The first SLR cameras were all silver metal with black leatherette to provided a non-slip surface. During the 1960's and 70's, all-black cameras were considered "pro" cameras (because they were less obtrusive) and as such cost more. As technology changed and cameras were made with more and more composite materials, it became more cost effective to manufacture the cameras in black. Now silver cameras are considered "stylish..."

There is nothing to it, just tradition. You can BET that if Canon made their entry level cameras black, and only their prosumer-pro models silver, everyone will be coveting silver.

Look at the MacBook Pros for example. White = cheapo entry, black slightly better, Silver PRO.

You know what would be kinda neat though? If they made an off white-version to match the 'L' Telephotos ...
