In searching for a hot shoe adapter... I couldnt' find one that looks like it would be the right one. i keep seeing ones that look like this, but the end of this cord doesn't look like the end of the cord in the square perfect picture:

The hole in the adapter you have there doesn't look like it fits the prong from the square perfect cord... still confused...

and what do you mean by "input"? All I see on my 285hv is a socket for an external power source and a small hole for the shutter sync cord (which ppl seem to be saying is only necessary if my camera didn't have a shoe???).

The 285HV has a port, as dpds68 showed. You don't need a hotshoe adapter.

The larger silver item is a converter for a larger port. Like using an old stereos with a new headset.

that cord that comes with the 285hv... which end is suppose to go into that port? is it the sharp end or the other end?

i want to note that the sharp end doesn't seem to fit all the way and the other end doesn't fit at all...
