Yes, a new bag and of course a new review!!! I spent a lot of time looking for hiking/urban travel bag that wasn't a messenger. I still love my DIY bag but I wanted something on my back that would scratch/bump/hit/etc against things. I looked at the Kata T214, Fastpack series, Flipside series, Slingshot series again, and a few messenger bags still. I found this forgotten jewel and found a few reviews. Everything seemed to point that you had to have the 9x in order to have your 70-200 and camera attach until there I found a post on DPreview that said I didn't! YES!!! Let's take a look.

0o0o0o0o0o0 ahhhhh!!!

This is the layout. Yes it's a little thin but perfect for your must haves. That's the Tok 10-17 which I use as a UWA for landscapes and the Sigma 70-200. My 18-50 is next to it with the 10-17 underneath much like my DIY bag setup.

See! It all fits! Camera with 70-200 attached with 1-2" above it. So maybe a TC attached could work or a longer lens?

Under the...lid, there is a zippered pocket. Pretty big, you could put a lot in here including remotes, batteries, anything. I just have my rainjacket for my camera and I'll probably make some kind of rain cover for the bag. It's spacious.!

Getting too heavy? Pull out the hidden waist strap. Hate it? Hide it! Love it!

The front pocket which is once again, surprisingly large. From left to right, top to bottom:Wired Remote, Lenspen/knife/lighter (all in middle pocket), 2 BP511 batteries; Nothing (memory card, batter, whatev), 4GB CF, 4GB CF. Those back pockets are DEEP! The space infront of all that expands and can hold quite a bit. Wanna see?

YES! That's my 430EX!!! Much like the Kata T214 you have the flash in a front pocket but it's still well protected.

Overall I'd give this bag a 8/10. It's great, spacious, and easy to use. Tamrac needs to get on the ball and make a rain cover for their bags!!! I wish the main area was a bit bigger. he design for the most part kills this but it's not bad. Better than the Slingshot 200 IMO because of how it sits on your shoulder. My 200 killed me but this sits a lot better and the waist strap actually works unlike the 200's. I chose this over the Kata because of space which...is almost thing. but this was cheaper! Also this has straps to add things to, the Kata does not. There's also another perk, a mod I found. Someone modded their's to hold a tripod or monopod on top of the lid. So when you open it to get the camera, it's still out of the way but holds it quite nicely. It's just the perfect size for the necessities of hiking or urban travels.

I love the 8X and the 9X. I bought the 9X so I could use my 100-400 L mounted to my 40D.
I too wish Tamrac would include an All weather cover. However, the 9X did keep my camera equipment dry walking back to my car after Game 5 Part 1 of the 2008 World Series.

I wish the zipper went both ways. Mine makes me crazy! :(

I agree, the zipper goes the wrong direction. I don't know why they'd do that, it totally slows down the draw. I also didn't like the shoulder strap.

Zipper hasn't bother me yet. Used it a lot today. Made my monopod holder mod tonight. Works awesome! Can't wait to try that out in the field. I'm very excited about this. I like that I can hang it from my right shoulder comfortably if my left ever gets tired. It proved itself quite useful today and I'll give it a good run on tuesday!

I actually loved my Velocity 9 for about a year, and I gave it away because I was hoping the new one would be even better. Now I regret it. I liked the old one better because of the zipper. but I have the Kata 214 now, and that will be my new urban bag.

How is the kata compared to the Velocity? I wish I got to see both side by side.

There is review of the Kata bag here

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=566336

The two bags are very different. The Kata bag is more of a torso bag, you can use as a sling bag. But what I like about it is that Kata thinks about the user, how equipment comes out of the bag.

You mean the thread I posted on numerous times! :p

Yeah, the fact that it kept being called a torso bag and not a lsing bag made me wonder how hard it was to sling around. My biggest thing was I couldn't carry water and with the Velocity I can get a pouch to put water in and other stuff.

The Kata 214 is what I'm leaning towards as well. Colonial Hobby has Kata in stock, but no 214's :( Too bad, I'm itching to buy one.

There's a review of the 214 on here. It looks great. I really like my Kata 3n1-30 and I'm sure I'll like the 214 since Kata made it.

dan

dang, I step away to get some coffee and everyone else mentions the 214 review.

So, instead of sewing a monopod holder onto the Velocity, put a water bottle on the Kata.

What I like about the Kata bags is the coolness. And that's true. They look like body armor. :) But my backpack Kata 465 is really nice, too. It looks like a small summer daypack. I find bags are what you like, not so much anything else. I have a bag for every occasion so I feel good, not that the bags are necessarily better. :) It's a style issue for me as well as function. I usually carry my 5D with 24-70 and 40D with 70-200 2.8 IS in my Domke F-802 for events. For anything else, I pick the bag I need. Hiking, the Kata 214. For city shooting, the Kata 214. For just grabbing the essentials, the Domke 5XB.

Size-wise, the Velocity 9x and the Kata bag 214 fit the same amount of gear.

Sewing? That's too much work.

A quick search found this. Add it to the Kata and you're done. http://www.amazon.com …TF8&qid=1232900845&sr=8-3 (external link)

Already saw that in the review. I didn't want stuff hanging.
