Thanks... still think it's not quite right because it doesn't feel so solid. I'll double check this evening, maybe pull it apart, and send it to Canon for repair. I need all 3 speedlites for weddings though, will have to rent borrow or buy another one if this one needs repair

I hear ya. Mine baaarreellly shifts. Almost like a lil' tick tack back and forth. But, I had a feeling if I sent it back I would most likely get one that does the same thing, or with my luck one that's even worse lol.

I took it apart, it's around the locking ring it's moving. I'll just order the part and replace it myself, it's dead easy to do.

Anyone know the part number for the 580EX II foot assembly?

My 580 EX II appears to lock tightly on my 40D

I like the older threaded locking system better. You can tighten it just right, any wear is easily compensated.

The metal plate is fine, though.

I had an issue with mine after i dropped it that it would lock into place fine but just above the mount was wobbly after taking it apart i found it was damaged so at first i glued it but after that i spent the few bucks and ordered a new base for it.

Mine is the same - locked tight, but has a little "play" above the locking mechanism...
This is on a 450D...

My 580EX II is secure in the hot shoe.
May be Canon just cannot make all the feet to fit their shoes

I ordered the part from Canon, replaced it myself in about 3 minutes, and it's all good now. I obviously broke something internal when I dropped it a while back. Thanks for the help everyone, Michael especially with the link to the part
