what should be my next camera?

hello everyone my name is Neil. i want to upgrade to a DSLR,
at the moment im using a Canon sd 1000 point and shoot
and i want to take my photography to the next level..

here are some shots i have taken with my P&S canon sd 1000

someone ? anyone?

Then get the XS with the kit lens and add a 50mm 1.8. XSI with the kit lens is above your budget.

I think I'd start with a 40D, get a fast standard prime like the Sigma 30mm or Canon 28/1.8, maybe a 430EX flash and see what else I need after that.

with that budget a used 20D or 30D would be nice, you can also check the prices of the XXXD models which are shipper than the XXD models, for example a New XSi with kit IS lens, this would be a good set up to start with, you can also just get the body and buy a better lens for around 200.

so i checked amazon for the xsi body only with a ef 50mm f/ 1.8 lens it comes up to $656

Depends, how big are your hands? I got an xti for my first camera and I couldn't stand it because it was so small in my hands. I should have gotten a used 30d for my first dslr. You can regularly find 30d's for around 400-450. Another 200 bones you can get a 18-55is with a little spare change. Or you could add the 55-250is for a little extra. If you have big hands, DONT GET A XXXD series camera. You will most likely hate it.

Which is $56 over your budget and you don't have a kit lens that covers an essential range.

Ahhh, didn't see the "budget" hmmm, well, can you still get a new xti?

you know, I'd buy used from an established member of this forum, there's some real good folks here that wouldn't sell a lemon, you could get a 30D for$400ish and maybe a plastic fantastic and a 430EX

i have held the xsi in my hands before at best buy and it didnt feel so bad .but im goin to look into the 30d

Go for a classic 5D with a 17-40L they are great from what I hear!

30D, 40D, 5D all in the used range, and a decent price too. 17-40 is a sweet lens as suggested. Lots of options for you.
