In the winter, the Forest Service burns the excess foliage around the Grand Canyon..

The heavy, smoke filled air gets drawn down into the Canyon in the early mornings until thermal warming can lift it up and out.. It is dramatic...but it sure does mess up any early morning light and photography work..
