Does anyone know if the picture they posted is of a 5D WITH the reinforcements? Coz the mirror on mine looks exactly like the picture posted. I bought my camera second hand, is there a way to find out if my camera has already had this done?

From talking to the Canon support staff today, this is not a case of "if your 5D is before this serial number, send it in" kind of thing. This CAN happen to all 5Ds. Unless the previous owner had the mirror fall out, chances are that this work has not been done to your 5D yet.

From reading the e-mail, no expiration date was mentioned. I assume this service is free until you've registered the camera and then have it serviced.

Since I'm driving down to Jamesburg tomorrow, I guess I will be one of the first to let you know how it goes, and whether they extend the warranty (which I highly doubt). I will let you guys know tomorrow night, though answers may have to wait until I get the body back.

Pure speculation...

And as lady luck will have it those new reinforcements and their tiny bit more weight will throw off the weight of the shutter and reduce shutter life. But no one will ever know.

Considering that the mirror is in no way attached to the shutter, why would you say that? The mirror assembly is a good half inch in front of the sensor/shutter assembly.

Sending mine in also. But I'm wondering how long it will take? They must be getting hundreds of 'em.

Am I reading posts such as this wrong?

Or have I read the Canon email wrong?

It sounds like people are sending in cameras on which the mirror has not detached.

The email says "We will repair and reinforce the mirror portion of the affected products free of charge."

However, in the sentence preceding that it defines "affected product" as "EOS 5D Digital SLR cameras whose main mirror has detached."

That definition of "affected product" is further enhanced by "We offer our sincerest apologies to those customers who have been inconvenienced by this issue."

If a customer's mirror has not been detached, they have not been inconvenienced. If it has not been detached, it is not an "affected product."

I called and talked to them. I`m sending mine in before it breaks and they advised me to. It`s for all 5D`s broken or not.

Can you register a 5D with Canon if you buy a used camera? It would be nice to get the email notices.

That's a good thing. It shows they still care about non-current models and are willing to do good service on them.

Yeah and if they are still selling the cameras then most likely its under warranty anyway. So +1 with Perry

Well, I'm taking my 5D to Florida on Thursday for two weeks.

I guess we'll find out if humidity makes the mirror fall off or not.

didnt say it was a bad thing just find it funny, the obviously knew about the problem before hand, im guessing they didnt want it too hurt sales and another reason for people to get the MKII.
