Pictures on here seem really nice. I really like this lens but it got pretty bad reviews on image quality on most sites. But when i log on to flickr or here, some shots are not so good, but a majority of them are surprisingly good. I really like this lens, just not sure on IQ just yet. Than again this is just a hobby, not a profession so maybe the 70-200 f4 prime lens maybe be a bit to pricey for me.

This is by far my most-used lens. It consistently produces good quality images and covers a very useful range. I haven't seen any bad reviews; on the contrary, the ones I've seen report positively on image quality but criticize the build of the lens, which is not professional quality by any stretch of the imagination. On the other hand, it's light and convenient to carry. I've owned mine since spring 2008, and it's stood up to a lot of abuse: snowdrifts, windy beaches, mountain hikes, being licked by dogs and dropped by kids. It's certainly robust enough for the average hobby photographer. IMHO you can't really go wrong with it; you're unlikely to be disappointed.

wow... this thread is really making me think! I've got a XSi with the kit lens and a nifty fifty. I was thinking of saving up for some L glass, but that jsut seems so impossible right now. I want something with a decent range on it, and this looks to fir the bill!

My main concern is "sharpness". I'm trying to build up my alamy portfolio and want to be able to put the sharpest photos out that I can. This lens looks pretty sharp! Does anyone have any 100% crops?

the f/4 aperture kind a bums me out, but I don't shoot low-light much anyways!

This lens can be incredibly sharp at close distances. I don't care for the results I get at long ranges, but maybe that's partially due to user error. I'm going to sell mine soon, but here is a post from mine with a 100% crop back when I used this lens more often:

I've got some pretty sharp moon shots hand held with this lens. I'll post one tonight when I get home. You don't get much longer distance than that...lol

do you have a link to a bad review?...i've never once seen anything bad about it...although i've seen that it doesn't measure up to a 70-200, that certainly doesn't qualify as a bad review

Heres one, this guy seems way to critical, saying you should step up to the 70-200mm or even the 70-300mm IS

I saw like 2 other reviews that now all of a sudden I'm having trouble finding (ive been all over the internet reading reviews)

This was taken over the weekend. Already posted in another forum, but wanted to post here too because I absolutely love this lens. Especially after only having the kit lens and a 50/1.8II. Great consumer grade lens!

Yeah, I'm familiar with the review in question, in which the reviewer concludes:

"My recommendation is to get the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens over the 55-250."

In my opinion this is a rather fatuous suggestion to make. To compare an EF-S telephoto zoom to an L lens which is at least two-and-half-times the price is just silly. If that's to be considered sound advice, then, by the same token, anybody currently contemplating purchasing an EF 50mm f1.8 II should forget all about it and start saving for a EF 50mm f1.2L!

The EF-S 55-250 IS is a fine lens, especially at it's price point. And, besides the above mentioned, I've had trouble finding any negative reviews, which doesn't surprise me considering how well it performs, in my opinion ;):D ;)
