Or go hardcore and get a medium format system.

I just did that. I bought a Lubitel 2...

You start to realise that a nuclear exchange between the US and USSR would have been rather one-sided if Russian camera tech is anything to go by!

I have an EOS 650. The same 650 I got in 1989, My first camera!
The very first in Canons EOS line, AF aperture priority and shutter priority.
I still shoot with this camera on occasion.
I know the Elan bodies are pretty good and I saw a eos 1N dell for $190 on Ebay the other day with the motor drive.

The OP was looking for a film body and a 50mm for under a $100. The EOS 650 has AV mode, and sells for $1 on Ebay. Leaves money left to buy a nifty fifty. Plus, it's the oldest EOS camera and the closest to the age he wants.

Go over to Kerrisdale camera and browse through their used section. I am sure you can find what you want there.

I was suspecting it by 1979 when we got a chance to disassemble a FOXBAT and found it rather primitive. The Soviets themselves had realized it by 1980 and fully expected President Reagan to launch an attack.

In the early 80s, the Soviets were buying up as many Texas Instruments "Speak and Spell" toys as they could to cannibalize the voice chip (for the "Bitchin' Betty" voice warning device) for their top-line fighter aircraft. They couldn't build one of their own...they couldn't even reverse engineer it. They had to cannibalize them from American toys. The State Department had to put a freeze on export of the toys to Soviet Bloc countries.

EOS3!

Why as above poster recomends incredible body full of features and solid showed one to my nikon mate who has gone to the d700 his comment feels real nice .
my 2nd choice the eos 5 why eos just more current rather than the fd series i had the A1
fantastic unit but when you realize the metering on the eos 5 just slaughters it in comparison the eos range for me.
just processed 4 rolls of fp4+ taken with the eos 3 on a cruise to new zealand 4 rolls and 4 equaly accurate sets of negs from the eos 3,if 100 dollars does not make the price for a eos 3 save up until you can you will not be disapointed.

Gear List : SLR BODIES: Eos 5, Eos 3, D30 ( GIFT TO SON INLAW) 40D( SOLD) 1DMK3 ( Current Body)

That's priceless!

I can just picture a poor Russian pilot furiously punching the 'eject' button whilst spiraling to his doom and being told "That is incorrect, please try again..."!!

Just to balance things up a bit, how many well known camera manufacturers are there in the US?

And as I remember, the US military laughed themselved silly over valve technology in a fighter until someone reminded them that ALL the high tech transistor and silicon chip based stuff in the American fighters would be unable to withstand the magnetic pulse of a nuclear bomb blast. On the other hand, the russian valves would carry on as usual.

Nasa spent a fortune producing a pen that would work in space. The USSR gave all its astronauts pencils. Now tell me who is the bigger idiot?

I had an AE-1 for at least 20 years. Served me quite well. Had an Elan 7e for about 2 years and really liked it's features, it had fantastic focusing. Then I went digital.

But I agree with the above. Get a top of the line film camera, they're cheap.

Ain't nothin but a thing.

I was looking for a film camera as well, not buying soon but just to check some there and thinking to try one, or to buy a cheap medium format film camera, but the process and workflow making it a silly idea for me.

A holga would be cool. The 35mm conversion is really neat too.

There is the need of good film scanner....

For anyone wanting to copy negs to digital on the cheap, scroll down the link:

http://www.flickr.com …4983/?search=film+scanner (external link)

If you have a 1:1 macro lens, you can make a decent copier for peanuts. You can knock together a Blue Peter jobbie in seconds (and it works!):

Of course, I wouldn't expect any of the tech-heads here to lower themselves to this level!

Good for anyone just wanting to have a bit of a dabble though....
