Need advice - i was offer to buy the canon 400mm f5.6 @US800 - the lens code is UHxxxx date manf. 1995 - seller stated lens at condition 9. I've not seen the camera.

The lens is 13yrs old - what is the life span of canon lens? would u buy such and old lens?

Thank you
sheewai

If the lens is in good shape and everything is functioning properly then it should be as good as a 400 F5.6 from a store less the warranty.

Yes I would. That's a good price, and it's a fantastic lens. Lenses last for ages.

$800 for it sounds great, I looked at a superb one at a local store and it was $950..

Just give it a good look over first

If you think you can get close to $800 when you sell it in the future, sure go ahead. Personally I'd just get a new one w/warranty. Old lenses may have fungus.

I just traded a 2 year old 70-200 f4L for a UI dated 200 2.8L. If it's in good shape, and money's tight, go for it.

There's no rule how long lenses last. Some may break after a week, some work like new after 20 years. My 24L is from 1998 and Ive had 200/1.8 which was made in 1989, no sign of age in anyway on either of them.
