I'm going to give my 400D to my brother soon, along with the lens that was bundled with it, the EF-S 17-85. This will leave me without a general purpose zoom to use with my 40D, so I'm looking at buying a new lens to replace it.

It doesn't have to be EF-S; in fact I'd like to make the move to full-frame one day so the less EF-S lenses I have, the better.

Can anyone make any recommendations for a good lens to fill this gap? I'm really looking to pay up to about £500..

TIA

You have a few options.

I haven't used it, but if you search, you will find mostly rave reviews of the EF-s 17-55 2.8 IS USM. Granted it is an EF-s lens, but I don't think you'd have any trouble selling it if you ever switch to another body.

Depending on the range you want, you should also take a look into the 17-40 4L and 24-70 2.8L, but keep in mind neither of these have IS, which is one of the benefits of the 17-55 2.8.

In your price range, I can only think of the 17-40.

If you are patient, you can find the 17-55 used for a decent price. A quick search of the classifieds here shows up this (£436+10 shipping):

Another vote for 17-40 since you can use it when you go FF later on.

Actually, scratch the £500 limit. Say £800 instead.
