Thanks for the comments, Ali Azri, skygod44 :)

Skygod44, i use a 580 EXII on a Hakuba LH1 flash bracket, with a DIY diffuser. Sorry i don't have a pic of the rig yet. The original ballhead on the hakuba was no good so it had to be replaced. Basically, it's a copycat of LordV (Brian)'s rig :D https://photography-on-the.net …hp?p=1876391&postcount=22

Wow!

That's quite a lump there!
I've only got the 100mm macro, but took it out last weekend with some ok results. Trouble is, with natural lighting, even tiny insects move too fast to keep them in the focus sweetspot, thus I know I'll need a flash unit pretty soon to enable me to whack up the shutter speed.
But....I don't like flash per se, so was wondering if a lens-mounted ring unit might be the way to go....
Any thoughts?

Can't answer on the ring flash but think i've seen some discussion on that. Cheers:)

Loved the colors and composition in No.2. The orange, green and black blends well. Great shots.

Thanks for the PM.
:D
I'm going to read up about ring flash units as I feel that's a route I'd like to take. Really love macro - it's such an accessible world.

No problem, Simon :). Most people don't seem to be very fond of the ring reflections in the bugs' eyes though:D

Really? Well, I've time to do a ton of research before I buy so I'll keep your thoughts in mind.

Looking forward to seeing more posts by you in the meantime.....

Just to show you a couple of images from a friend, Lordmint: https://photography-on-the.net …2693&highlight=ring+flash

Check out the reflections in the jumpers' eyes and see if you're okay with that :)

YUCK!

But I'd probably never get to that level of magnification with my 100 macro...

And wouldn't a softer diffuser have helped? Plus, with such smooth eyes, a bit of cloning?

As I said, can't buy anything right now, but the more I learn, the better I'll be informed when I leap...just like the spider!

Thanks again!
:D
