You sure about that? This photo is from Joby's website.

I've done exactly that with my 40D and 70-200 f/2.8L IS on a Gorillapod SLR. It's stable enough to hold all that up, but I wouldn't dream of being able to take photos like that.

Yeah, And Lester Bogen used to run ads where he was sitting on a platform on a Manfrotto tripod. But would you try that?

That's my point. Snails said it wasn't marketed that way, but obviously it was.

Which configuration do you use it in then? If anything, a tripod orientation should be the most stable setup since all three legs are supporting the weight. Even in that configuration mine was pretty weak for the SX10 IS and I wouldn't bother with the 50D.

I hope you guys that use your Gorillapod to hang your gear use a good backup strap (or line the ground with down pillows ;) ).

Would a gorilla pod securely hold a gripped 30D and 17-40?

Like any camera mount - it depends on how you use it. If you're using it to anchor the camera around a branch, or stabilize it on a wall, or something like that, yeah, most likely, if you have the SLR Zoom or the Focus. If you want it to be free-standing, then don't trust it. That's not what it's designed for.

But even when I've tried to use it like that Jon (around a branch or pole), it's so unstable....Just wobbles and wobbles......OK, no more from me....:p

I got my SLR Zoom today, and after brief testing, not rigorous by any stretch, i am very happy. I have done a number of 30 sec exposures with the 'pod wrapped round a chair & in normal tripod position on the floor and detect no camera shake at all (using a wireless shutter release).

Cheers
Rowan

If you have (from your quoted price) the basic Gorillapod, meant for P&S cameras, it's Joby-rated at 11.5 oz; Your G10 weighs 12.3 oz. according to Canon. So you're overloading it. Using Joby's "Gorillapod selector" for any of the PowerShot G models, I get told to use the Gorillapod SLR, weight rating 1.75 lb.

The gadget is fantastic, and whilst it may not be the item you need, I don't think it a waste of money. In a previous post I mentioned some of the uses I put mine to.

A waste of money item is one that breaks the first time one uses, stops working immediately or simply does not work. I would not put the Gollilapod in that category. :)

Which version of the gorillapod do you have? Is it the Zoom SLR? And which camera+lens do you use?

I'm very interested to know about the grip performance. As I just wrote it in my previous post, my heaviest combo is pretty light: just 1 kg.

thx

Gorilla Zoom.
I have a 30D and 17-55 2.8 IS - I tend often to use it as hand held as brace with 2 legs on my chest while I am leaning on something (usually for shots in a church etc). Havn't used it much as a tripod.

I'd use it to hold a remote flash, but that is about it.

Mine works well for what it was designed to do which is to be a super light and small portable mount, but a tripod it ain't.

I keep it with my bag at all times, but if I know that a tripod is going to be needed, I bring one.

Anyone's trust level can be extrapolated backwards from here....300/2.8 IS and a gripped 50D
