Really nice images Mike. You've come quite a ways in the last 18 months or so. That 5D takes some sweat shots at 3200 doesn't it?

Haven't been around here much lately. We had a meet yesterday evening. I'm now walking (with a cane) and still making do with my "landscape lens" (70-200 f/4L). As usual, this gym wasn't the greatest as far as lighting. I was using my 5D, ISO 3200, 1/100 to 1/200 @f/4 and I still had to bump the exposure +.5 to +1.5 in ACR.

One a 'personal' note, Hannah did good...out of 10 girls in her division (level 5) she placed 5th on bars, 5th on floor, a 3-way tie for 3rd on beam, 3rd on vault and a 4th in the all-around. Hannah was a team of one yesterday, so it was kind of nice that the coach was able to focus all her efforts into Hannah.

Thanks for the compliment Brice. I've learned a bunch from you and others here!

Just a heads up for the Mark III shooters

I've been using a feature that been documented but I not sure enough Mark III shooters are using it so I'll add it here because I'm been using it with gymnastics with great success for low light motionless images.

With the Mark III you can add thu CF's a shooting profile that will automatically engage when you press on the * button.

Generally I'm shooting in "M" with what I think are the best settings for action images in a given gym.

Then I will dial in a setting that will give me a good exposure for a non-action image. Using the CF this shooting profile is save to the star button.

During a meet I can instantly switch between the 2 shooting profiles (motion & standing) just by a thumb movement from the regular focus button and the star button.

more info here abut the setup...

Nice to see some new stuff here. Very nice shots Mike. I wish I had your f4 for our last meet. It was a large meet(about 1600 girls) and they held it at the Arizona Cardinals Stadium. It was the best light I've ever experienced. I took a lot of test shots trying to get it right. I finally ended up at f1.8 1/800 and iso800. The 40d is a huuuuge improvement from the xti. If they hold the meet at the same place next year I will probably rent some better lenses and shoot the whole team over the three days.

Great shots everyone! I love coming here to see these!
Here's one of my daughter from her meet this weekend, it's not the best but I like the flag in the background. :D Let me know what you think. Thanks!
ISO 3200, F4, 1/400.. it was the best I could get in the arena.

WOW that 40D at 1600 kicks my IIN's fanny at 800. Wonderful sharpness. Love the beam shot.

I agree, the flag helps make the image, although you captured some nice action there as well.

Thanks! It's a big meet - Vitamin Water Team Challenge (used the be Aquafina Team Challenge until this year), and they always have that giant flag hanging at it every year, which is a cool backdrop for the girls.
Too bad the lighting at WestConn's gym is so awful.

Hey gang! It's been a while so I thought I would post some from this past weekend. We had a mock meet with a judge in attendance advising our girls. Here are just a few:

This combination of the girls leo's and the gym lighting really wreaks havoc with the colors. You can see the full gallery here:

C&C is welcome.

Nice pics kjmac, very clean, sharp shots!

And it's nice to get a look in the Old Barn.

Hey gang; The Minnesota season came to a close last night. Here are a couple from the State Meet at the U of MN Sports Pavillion. It was fun to shoot at a venue with light :)

Jeremy, those 2nd, 3rd, and 4th shots are great.

I like to see this thread come back to life now and again! :)
