The flash is way too strong on this camera. There is no way to reduce the flash output, its either on, auto, or off. What I've been doing is to reduce the exposure to -1 to not get washed out faces but the overall picture is darkened.

Is there a workaround for this?

You can soften the flash some by putting some tissue paper (white, of course) over it.

I was considering using a piece of scotch tape on the flash. Has anyone tried this? I don't want to have tissue paper/coffee filter with me at all times.

What's CDHK?

I did the scotch tape thing with my sd750 when I had it. Worked wonders! Try it out!

I'm glad to hear that it actually works! I'll try it out later tonight. What's great about scotch tape is that i can use as many layers as necessary and cut it to fit.

CHDK just added flash control for my SD900 about 2 weeks ago I assume it is coded into the base CHDK so it should work for all cannon powershot's. The adjustments are low med. and high or (0,1,2) Reading the CHDK forum on the SD790 the port seems close to being done

The flash on the 790 is way too strong.

Is there a way to set the flash to always be off? This setting doesn't seem to "stick" when I turn the camera off/on.
