How often do you use your 70-200 f/2.8 IS? (want to sell mine but hesitated)

So, how often do you use this lens?

The reason why I ask is because I barely use this lens and thinking of selling it.

Yet, everytime I try to sell it, I will take it out and snap around and fall back in love with it. Let's be honest, it is one awesome lens.

After awhile though, it will be collecting dust again.

So, I am just wondering how often people use them and should I sell mine?
I do shoot for my friends' wedding or company dinners/events from time to time, but not on regular basis. So do I absolutely need this lens? Or am I better with 24-105 and2 primes (like 50 1.4 and 85 1.8)

There is a lot of questions. Thanks guys.

Ionno. Are you hard up for cash?

The way I see it, even if it gets used 1x/year, it's worth it to keep it because w/o it, you'd miss out on the opportunity. I never shot with the darn thing but from what I read here and the photos I've seen posted, it's a fantastic lens. Good glass is good glass.

But if the economy's got you down and you need to pawn it to keep a roof over your head or feed the family, then by all mean, that comes first. :D

I've had mine since January (albeit the non-IS version) and I've used it quite a few times already. I'm shooting sports so I love using it, but even without sports, I love using it. How long is from time to time? Once a month or once every six? If you've got a friend with one, you could borrow his if you sell yours. Maybe even buy something like the 200mm f/2.8 prime with some of the money you get from the sale. If you have the 85mm f/1.8 you've pretty much got the outside range covered from the 70-200mm.

Mine is the least often use lens, but the most important one. Everytime my kids receive a award or perform on stage in school, I need that lens.

How does how others use this lens affect your potential sale? If lots of people use theirs, does that mean you keep yours?

You already know it's good, but you don't use it much - the decision depends on which you think is the bigger issue.

I am not in need to feed my family. Just I find it just sitting around, just like $1500 sitting around doing nothing.

I probably really need to use it (as in for a wedding or an event) once every 4 months (on average)

But like what jcwdds said when you need it, you need it.

In some ways this is my most used lens, because I have no primes or no 2.8 lenes apart from this, I try to use it alot.

I use mine on all serious shoots. But that's me.

If you can't justify keeping it, you must think about justifying the cost of selling it away (in terms of $ loss).

I tested my 70-200 f/2.8 IS alot when I purchased it new. Haven't touched it in a very long time. I couldn't imagine letting that zoom go even if I dont touch it in a year.

I dont use mine often either but I will never get rid of it .. well only if I am dire financial trouble. I can probably never fully justify buying it in the first place other than for the want for it... but, I have never had any regrets buying it.

Problem is like with all my lenses... once its not there I always find a shot that I need to use it for.

One advantage in selling is that in this current market you can probably sell it for as much ass you bought it for or even more...

Several times a week.

Spring and Fall it's my most used lens.

I have the f4 and use it most of the time, if I had the f2.8 I would use it all the time.

Even if you dont use it much, keep it

Unless you're a very outdoor person (which I'm not), I don't think a 70-200mm would see much action during cold seasons. I use it primarily for our young kids, and since they stay indoor a lot more these days, it's not surprising that my 70-200 hasn't seen much action lately. I find myself using shorter focal-length lenses; 24-70 and 85 1.2 indoors.

I'm very happy with my 70-200 2.8 IS, and I would never sell it unless I desperately need cash in the future.
