I went to Yosemite valley last Tues. to shoot the Horsetail Falls effect. That's when the sun is in position to light up the water in alpenglow, but not the cliff. Myself and 50 others waited, and just before the optimum time, dark clouds rolled in and obscured the light.
I did manage to get some shots ahead of time. Oh well, there's always next year.

Here's another just before the clouds came in.

Yeah you get that don't you. It's pretty frustrating!

I like your second shot though, it's really cool.

I really like second shot, despite it being not the light you wanted. And great title too ;-)a

The first pic is beautiful. Stunning location and very nice capture.

Just did a Google Images search, as I've never heard of that waterfall, nor the effect you mentioned, and to be honest, I wouldn't bother.

I think your picture is better than those - well, certainly the ones I've found so far! - without the effect.

The location is stunning, and your technique nailed it! Maybe the second shot with the blacked out section is more dramatic, but I like the detail you've retained in the rest of the waterfall.
:D

Skygod- Horsetail Falls is an ephemeral fall between El Capitan & Three Brothers in Yosemite Valley. In order for the effect there must be ample snow for runoff, warm clear days, and the sun in the correct position at sunset. Which only occurs late Feb & early Mar.
Then you an get shots like this.

I can see where you're coming from, but this shot ^^^ looks "gold", while your shot up top, to me, looks PLATINUM!!!

Nature can be such a cruel mistress... Still, a nice shot.

Hey "neighbor"! I've been wanting to get up there for this for the past couple of years and something always came up. Like you said there's always next year.

At least you were able to get up there. I'm still waiting for my first trip of the new year.
