im not farmilliar with the 40d but on my XSi, if i press the down arrow it opens the picture style menu, so i am assuming, you can press that wheel up down left and right (kinda like an ipod, spins and clicks)

im willing to bet pressing it up goes to the metering mode menu....50 bucks

You just may have a prototype idea on your hands :D

I'm glad to hear your problem is fixed. :)

I'm guessing that the wheel or casing was putting pressure on the style button that is located just to the bottom left of the wheel.

Just got my camera back from Canon. They replaced the rear assembly and the LCD which took care of the problem. I must say that I am very impressed with the speed in which they operate. I sent it in on Monday It arrived at the NJ factory on Tuesday and I just got it back today (Friday). They also cleaned the sensor which is a bonus. I don't know what else they did but I always had a few specks of who knows what in my viewfinder and that is now gone. Props to Canon. It's always good to know that a company really stands behind it's product and wants to help it's customers!
