Yesterday I checked the price of Canon Primes on Amazon and was surprised to see some price increases . For ex

1) 50mm f1.8 used to cost $85 now its $91
2) 85mm f1.8 used to cost $355 now its $429
3) 50mm f1.4 I don't remember the exact old price but I was pretty sure that it used to cost less than the current price of $355.

Also Amazon says that all these lenses ship in 1 to 4 weeks which might indicate that they are getting a new lot of lenses from Canon and they have increased the price for these lenses. These price increases are coming a few weeks after the price increase this year. I hope that its Amazon not Canon increasing these prices.

B&H and Adorama still have the same price but except for the 50mm f1.8 the rest of them are backordered or out of stock. I was wondering if any one else has any news about price increases on these primes

Prices always go up in a recession.

My local camera shop (Classic Camera, NJ) told me yesterday that Canon had canceled their last lens order and gave them the option to re-order as of April 1 at increased prices. The new lens order would be received in 2-3 weeks after the 1st.

Makes sense given the shortage of lens' out there.

When Canon ( and others) increased their prices earlier this year it was due to the fact that the Japanese Yen had appreciated against other currencies. But now the Yen has come back to its original level. I guess this time Canon is getting greedy and increasing the prices again knowing that us photographers will buy these lenses inspite of these price increases.

I was just looking around and saw that the canon 50 1.4 is now 399, that's 100 more than I paid for it last year. Ouch.

A lot of times if Amazon is out of stock, it will put up the price of a 3rd party retailer that does have the product in stock. Just something to keep in mind.

However, I have noticed that many lenses are out of stock, and my guess is that they will come back in stock at higher prices....

It's not the price of the 3rd party retailer that I have quoted. It's the Amazon price and it says that the lens will ship in 1 to 4 weeks.

I heard this had to do with the value of the Yen, but i think there are probably a couple reasons for it, like the season, the economy, etc.
