Moon shot from last night (~98% full).
EF 100-400L + Canon 1.4x II TC + Kenko 1.4x Pro300 = 784mm (1254mm equivalent).

Ah, cool, so you can stack up converters then? Nice moon shot John. I tried the other night but couldn't match the focus I got with my half moon, it was too washy....

Thanks! Yup, you just gotta put the canon TC next to the lens since it has an element that protrudes out:
40D->Kenko TC->Canon TC->Lens = 784mm actual focal length (1254mm equivalent on a crop body).

You can also stack a 1.4x Canon TC & a 2.0x Canon TC, but they only stack one way:
40D->Canon 1.4x->Canon 2.0x->Lens.

Those are one of the hardest to shoot- they never stop moving long enough to focus. Nice shot

My first attempt at shooting birds. I bought the lens from forum member jeev and am very happy with it.

Shooting birds in flight however, very illuminating experience. Gives me immense respect for the folks who make it look easy.

5D set to AI-Servo, multiple-shot and with assist points turned on.

So I see a bird flying, point lens and shoot right! Yes, pointed, see nothing! Hmm.. take lens out and look again, bird is right there. Look through lens again, aaah, now I see it, that faint white blob that I thought was an OOF cloud is the bird. Quickly focus on it! my 5D takes a while (I had the lens accidentally on 1.8m to inf), by then the bird takes a sharp dive and I have lost it. Oh, well, I tried.

After several such tries, I realize that muscles have started growing (atleast fatigue that promises future muscle growth has set in).

Next time! you randomly moving, cloud impersonating birds!! I'll get ya! However next time I'll need to (a) recognize them in my VF (b) Ensure AF limiter is set correctly (3) Worry about IS (4) Worry about exposure (5) worry about the final background I'll get once I click the shutter while panning. Real simple! On top of it, my fingers freeze off as it gets real windy there.

The following photos were shot at the Palo Alto baylands around the Duck Pond. Both hand-held. Only one of them is a duck and the other I call, BIF. Being an ignorant fool, I don't know their proper names *yet*. I have filed them under "birds" in LR. All shot at 400mm/5.6 with no UV filter.

The first attachment is almost a 100% crop. Fantastic result! The images received a standard clarity bump and standard sharpening in LR. The white was ETTR and hence exposure was moved down to the left in processing.

Practice shooting one of these little buggers in flight and BIF will become a "walk-in-the-park."

Hah! Right! You are obviously pretty amazing with tracking a dfly smoothly with a 8 lbs weight. I on the other hand, will be building character via disappointment.

I am not sure if folks regularly attempt dragon fly in flight (DAFFT :lol with the 5D's AF system.
