70-200 would be my choice. It gives you enough distance that you can get the picture without influencing the picture - if that's what you want.

I don't know yet, but I have strong suspicions that it will be my 24-105 IS and 50mm 1.4 when I do finally get a 5D Mark II.

Since you didn't exclude having a flash I would go with the 24-105L, if no flash was available I would say 24-70L. I'll admit the color and contrast are marginally better on the 24-70L but the extra range, IS, and nearly same IQ of the 24-105L is difficult to pass.

While I lack the serious funds I would need to get a 5DII I would have to say the 24-105.

That lens lived on my camera for almost half a year as my only lens....I sold everything else to get my 5D. So I can tell you from personal experience that the 24-105 is (for me) the ultimate lens on my 5D. Wide enough to see everything and yet I can zoom and get those almost telephoto photos. Plus I can crop the photos and still have them look great.

It's still my go to lens when I leave the house, unless I'm out for something specific. Now f/4 is a bit slow when you're inside, but that's why I picked up a flash.

I love my 24-105. (plus it has IS)

I see your stakes, I raise you one :p.

85 1.2L. It is the reason I'm still shooting Canon.

It is the reason I chose Canon.

I dont understand why you would want to spend money on a 5dmkII just to shoot pics of your kids in the first place, but thats m.o.
I would probably spend the rest of my money tree on the 35mm f1.4.

24-70L if I could only have one lens on the cam....

Me too. It is always on my 40D while my other lenses share my 20D.

I'd have to vote for the 24-70L with the 70-200L IS coming in second.
