Still worth it getting a Pro1?

I don't take my 30D and lenses with me daily, so I'm thinking about getting a PnS or SLR-like camera to bring along with me literally everywhere I go.

My question is, Pro1s are running for around $200 or less nowadays. Are they still worth getting or are the features too outdated? The L lens is an awfully attractive spec.

If the answer is no, what should I get? I would set the budget around $150.

If you were talking of the G10, 5 years of camera improvements may count, but a new Pro1 would be far better than any camera in the $150 range.

If you can found an old Pro1 without faulty mechanical or electronic components, it will be still a good buy. I have my 5 year old batteries still working, but many of the original Pro1 batteries may be exhausted. Consider the price of new batteries and check that the charger is in good condition too.

For more about the Pro1, check this post that I wrote 12 hours ago in a thread on this matter.

My 5 year old Pro 1 has been in the shop twice but it still works nicely and I keep using it even tho I have bought newer P&S cameras...which have gravitated to my son's house :)

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

Sure it has its faults but for a lightweight/daytime carry around it's a awesome little camera. I am never without mine :D

A Pro 1 will take absolutely wonderful pictures in good light if you have the patience to deal with a 5 year old camera. Slow focus, no higher than ISO 100, and none of the bells and whistles we have come to expect are a few of the issues. Not worth it for me, but......

Where are you finding pro1 cameras for 150 ish?
That is a hard deal to beat.
I have been researching the g10 and the pro1 and I am amazed at how well the pro1 still competes.

I never, Not once claimed to read your post...

Since the OP has a 30D already then batteries and charger shouldn't be of too much concern since they're the same for both cameras. Even if they need to buy a new battery they could make use of it between both bodies just to get extra value from it if that was a concern.

I use my Pro1 for casual shooting every once in awhile when I want to travel light. It produces great images, but I admit that the write, focus, and zoom speed is a little frustrating at times given todays' standards... but that should be obviously understandable and expected given its age.

newton: I don't know where you can get a Pro1 for $150 or so. I paid $750 for mine and Amazon is selling them right now new for about $900. I also have a Canon XSi, but still use my Pro1 most of the time. The "L" glass is a plus and the pictures come out better than needle sharp. Like other post have said it does have that dreaded shutter lag and low ISO ratings. However, the built in flash shots are far better than any camera I have used and that includes film cameras I've used for more then 60 years.

Just a suggestion, I wouldn't buy a point and shoot camera used. You may need that one year warrenty.:(

Amazon is not the best place to determine resale values...it's a joke on A LOT of items, absolutely stupid prices on some things and this is a perfect example. If someone is paying $900 bucks for a Pro1 then they must have to much money to spend and are just to lazy to look elsewhere:rolleyes:

There's one HERE for sale by a member for less than $200 bucks. And there are others listed in the for sale area as well...and on E-bay, and Craigslist, FM forums, etc, etc...
