If anything just buy online. Better stock (most of the time) and almost always better prices. Also, how often are you really buying lenses? You have a great setup as it is and I cant imagine you are needing to run out and buy lenses constantly. Its all up to you, and of course you can do as you like ( :p ), but when you think about it for most I would not think that would be a huge deal.

Saying Canon has stock issues is also funny in comparison to Nikon for me as Nikon is the one that usually releases something and then it is not available widely for months and months and sometimes even years! (take the 18-200VR for example)

Either way, do what makes you happy. If that is switching to Nikon, go for it!

Seriously in retail stores in Canada, well here in S Ontario there is a huge shortage of Canon fast primes and a lot of EF stock.

We'll see like I said what happens. ;)

The out of stock thing is a symptom of the times. Retailers just aren't carrying as much stock and manufacturers are a little bit more careful how much stock is out there. I've heard other rumors but have to wait and see if the other shoe drops.

Sounds like you've decided to go with Nikon. Hope things work out well for you.

Haven't decided anything yet. Won't until I talk to Canon either, I'm a little ways away from coming home with armfuls of Nikon gear.

Well apparently Patty is seeing if they have a 100-400 they can ship to me so I can send this one back to them. She pretty much said she didn't really see them doing a direct replacement. I don't really care as long as I have one to use, they can take a year to fix mine.

I also said there is no way anymore money is being spent on it, it's defective. It wasn't dropped or damaged by use, it just fell apart. She agreed that no more money would need to be spent. (we'll see how that holds up)

So waiting for her to call back on a replacement.... ;)

Hope it gets sorted this time.
Whilst I am a CPS member I would expect and hope servicing/repairing equipment to be to an equal level for any owner.

I'll tell you one thing - Nikon lenses simply don't measure up to Canon. The D300 is one fine body, truly excellent. But Nikon glass selection is the opposite.
I switched from Canon to Nikon after carefully looking at the options the bodies offered. I only wish I'd done as much research on the lens side.

Hmmm, I've never had problem with Nikon pro glass, Nikon does know how to make very high quality lenses for various uses. I do agree that there is not the same choices on the Nikon side.

Pros and cons... If I do end up going Nikon I won't be worried about lens quality, variety maybe. ;) My main issues will be making the choice to get a D2Xs or go to D300/700, while they're nice there are things the D2 series does better.

I'm holding out that I'm getting a loaner while they repair mine and then it's not an issue.

Why? It is the same as on the Canon side. There are still soft copies, and there are still better models and worse models.

I think some people expect such a difference when switching, there really is not that big of a difference. The same pixel peepers exist and the same decision dynamics are at play.

Well that's why I wouldn't be worried, it's the same process you try multiple copies until you get one that's good. If it's good then it'll be fine and work well.

Again I don't have issues with either or Canon/Nikon I just need stuff to work and be reliable. My F5 is flawless, never ever had any problems with it ever. When I had a D70s, it was great, no issues. 20D, perfect. 40D is great as well. D2H imploded from shutter issues, known problem. 1DMKII is fantastic, no issues except I should grab some new batteries, that's all.

when you comin' back AL :D? i didn't figure you too long for the dark side as you seemed to be on a journey of discovery more than switching for any real world reasons ;).

I think about it every single day, Ed. Right now, I'm pretty much laid up (been in bed for a month), so even the thought of shipping is not something I want to go through. But I've been thinking a lot about it.

I miss my 24-105 and 100-400. There's just no Nikon counterparts. Plus, I absolutely do not like body-driven AF. What really stuns me is how 3rd party lenses for Nikon are more expensive than the ones for Canon when the Nikon ones often don't have af motors!!!
