i skimmed it...but I'm guessing the jist of it is due to shortage? If that's really the case, why has it happened over the last few years that it's timely around the rebates?
That's a very general statement. Where has it happened and how often? If you follow the thread on FM, Henry from B&H confirmed that it happened once, and it was a human glitch that was corrected. There was NO further evidence provided that it happened "over the last few years."
I'm guessing what is happening at the major retailers like B&H is this pent up rush/demand for all the popular lenses once the rebate started. That in conjunction with the limited supply for those lenses could easily account for the recent price increase.
Really, if everyone stopped buying the popular lenses because of the price increase, or bought somewhere else, I would venture to guess that the price would come down, barring a price increase from Canon themselves. Besides, the rebate lasts till July 11, and we haven't even gone a week since it started!
Note that no one is talking about the price decrease of the 85 f1.2L at B&H. This is not a conspiracy--it's just free market economics at work.
P.S. Please read the whole article to get a sense for what's happening.
