I'm flying to Chicago in July for a shoot for a magazine. Its my first paid job and I was thinking of renting the 5D mk II, I'm doing a 14 page spread with a lot of full page pictures. I was thinking of the better bokeh, the full frame with my 17-40L and the iso capabilities. And the overall better picture quality, what do you think?

I'd say go for it. If it was me, however, I would get it early on and shoot it for a while before taking it to a job.

The only real problem YOU WILL HAVE is returning the 5DM2 :D

Ha yeah that's true, I'm going to get it a few days earlier for sure.

Just curious does it use sd memory cards and how many pics would a 16gb card get me

It accepts only CF cards.

If you shoot RAW, each image is about 25MB. So a 16GB card will give you around 640 pictures. I'm don't know about the various file sizes of the different JPEG compressions.

And an extra battery?

Things must be pretty tough in Chi-town - they have to import photographers from Vegas ;):).

If your current body is the 450D, you will be in for a shock to the system mate with the 5D2, or even a 5D

Have fun! :)

You'll love the 5d mkII... I agree, good luck being tough enough to return!

I wouldn't do any serious shooting without a backup battery - I'm sure the rental company can provide one for you. If you don't have any lenses with IS, the battery will last a bit longer, but you never know sometimes...

Also, regarding CF cards; I use 8gb cards and get 285-300 on each one. As a another safety precaution, you might use more of the smaller cards than one or two big ones. You never know - cards check out once in a while.

Good luck on the shoot!

I actually just reserved it, yeah Kevin lensrentals, I love them have used them a few times. I just did 7 days though I don't really need 10. It ended up $300 with shipping.

Thanks for the advice on the cards bjannsen, are you shooting raw or jpeg?

Runninman yeah its ANA, I have been shooting free for them with a small pic in a monthly article and I finally got a break so who knows where it'll lead.

I don't think you need a backup battery. When was the last time you've ever had a battery die (without any reason) in the middle of a shoot?

This camera should be able to handle 2000 shots or so before needing a recharge (at least according to what others have said). My current battery has 185 shots and has used 10%.
