Add the 24-105 L f/4. Great walk around.

Bang for the buck? The 24-105 is a $1,200 lens o_O.

Are we talking FF or crop?

FS: 85 1.8 w/hood - $300!!!
1D Mark II - This is my Canon. There are many others like it, but this one is mine.

It is a very relative question, highly depend on the size of the "money". For about $1000, my take is 24-105L for FF and 17-55IS for crop. For under $500, I will take Tamron 17-50 for crop, and Canon 50f/1.4 for FF.

To me the 70-200 f/4L is a fantastic lens for the $. For consumer zooms the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM is a great value.

But my Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 is the best bang for the $ for me  It must be, because it's my favorite lens to use!

'Best' isn't always cheap.

Having said that..I think:

24-70 f/2.8 for full frame
17-55 f/2.8 IS for crop

But the best lens is always whats best for you/intentions. Best lens doesn't mean best shooter.

85mm f1.8. L quality results from a consumer-priced lens. Fast lens, too.

i am surprised no one has said it, need to know what you are shooting.

but for me, my 70-200 f/4 and 85 1.8 are tops.
