1D MKIII can't focus in low light but 40D can.

Hello. I'm new here and I need some help.

I loaded firmware 1.2.5 in my MK III and heard about the possible loss of low light focusing so I thought I'd try it out as compared with my 40D. Well my MK III with a 24-70 @2.8, with or without expansion points enabled, with or without focus search on or off can't focus on the same thing that my 40D with 17-55IS @2.8 can. The MK III just racks back and forth and just won't lock on. The 40D locks focus with no problem at all. I haven't yet sent the MK III in for the latest fix so maybe that will fix it?

Any suggestions? I tried to find a link to download firmware 1.2.3 but can't find it. Does anybody have a link?

Thanks for any opinions/help!

I loaded the latest 1.2.5 firmware but it hasn't yet been in for the latest fix. I hope when I do that the 1D can snap to focus at least as well as the 40D

My serial is 57xxxx. I thought the latest fix was recommended for all MkIII's?

well the 1d3's came out with a bit of an issue with the "sub mirror" which causes problems like this. Regardless of the serial i would definitely be getting mine fixed.

I just sent mine in 2 weeks ago, came back alot sharper and quicker and it wasn't even in the serial "range"

I am definitely sending mine in and hope to get it back better than ever. It's good to hear that yours came back quicker AND sharper than before. I've also been having some bizarre focusing issues with my 70-200 2.8IS that I really hope are fixed!

Does anyone know of a link to firmware 1.2.3? Is it even possible to downgrade the firmware?

Jesus people. Horror story after horror story. I'm coming in to some money in the next week or two which I have designated to buying a 300L 2.8 and a camera body. I was thinking maybe giving the Mark III a chance, but I just can't seem to bring myself to do it. Maybe I'll "upgrade" to the Mark IIn, LOL.

I don't mean to doom the 1D3 I'm just trying to figure out if anyone has done a similar comparison or had similar issues. I'll reserve judgement until I get it back from the fix.

Really?
Not sure if I view this as a horror story.

It's pretty cut and dry actually. Firmware 1.2.5 does nothing if you don't get the recall done. End of story.

I have the same firmware AND the recall done. My MKIII can AF in low light like no other body I have owned, including the 40D and 5D/5D MKII.

nicksan: That's good to hear that you can compare directly to the 40D and that the 1D3 locks focus better.

I'd still be interested to revert back to 1.2.3 just to see if there's any difference though ;)

man i dread the thought of having to send my camera off for a couple weeks. even to get cleaned.

I only have the 5d but i am hating the thought of reaching for my old trusty 350d backup.

I bet the feeling is at least 10 times worse if you have to send off a new 1dmk3 for a fix.

I would definitely suggest doing it, of course, but it MUST be hard to say goodbye.
