Haven't used this lens much for portraits, but I think I might have to start doing so. Shooting at f/4 on full frame still yields relatively shallow DOF, and is a good aperture for getting most facial features in focus, but still knocking out the background well enough. Plus, it helps that this lens is as sharp as the best primes in the world, even wide open. Honestly, this lens still blows my mind even after a year and a half of ownership. It is SO good.

Quick shot of my daughter playing climb the couch, taken at f/4 with bounced flash on my 1Ds II:

100% crop...still amazed at how sharp this lens is at any aperture:

ok. so I broke down. It was between this F4 IS and the F2.8 IS . I ordered this one and will have it tomorrow.

Don't be surprised if your 200/2.8 finds itself sitting a lot more often...

I too am impressed with the amazing capabilities of this lens. These two shots were taken early one morning at Shorncliffe, which is in Queensland Australia.

Great shots Gary.

Thanks!

I'm still blown away by the sharpness of this lens wide open.

Rented this lens over a trip to Disney World. It's on my to-buy list now. ;)

Here's mine with this lens, not as clean as yours and has not been washed for 1 month.
