I haven't had any of the problems you've just listed with mine.
Luck of the draw I guess.

Trying to find a good grip for my 40D.

Was thinking of the Phottix. Can't seem to find one.

Anyone?

I found an Ebay seller that carries the Phottix Grips (external link). I've got a 50D on the way and am thinking of going this route for the grip. I've had Phottix grips in the past and have had no problems with them.

I purchsed an Opteka for my XTi. I ordered it from Amazon for $89 with two batteries. They are just as good as the Canon batteries. When I bought my used 20D, I ordered another Opteka grip for that one, again with the two batteries for around $89. This one has worked like a champ as well.

I would recommend the Opteka brand highly.

Another thing I read is the Opteka:
"Opteka is proud to be allowed to use the same factory and mold as Canon uses for their BG-E2."

I work for a major manufacturing company. We make (made?) a product that had the Craftsman (Sears) brand name on it. It was one of our products with different paint and a few other cosmetic differences. MANY products are sold in the same way. Example ... as buurin pointed out ... "same mold and factory" as the Canon grip.

I also worked for a major manufacturing company (31 years). We built our own major brand tires and "Private Label" brands as well and in the same plant and often using the same molds. One just as good as the other? No, the materials, design, and the QC were a difference. Same plant, same mold, but same quality? No.

There's no doubt in my mind, Phottix, Opteka & Lindelight's Meike grips all come out of the same plant...

Private labels are the principal M.O. for Costco, Safeway, Walmart, Target & thousands of other retailers.

Ive never experienced anything other than canon's BG-E2 on my 20d, but I don't know If i would buy off brand. Because if it somehow ruined the camera (battery leak?) then I don't think canon would fix it, whereas they would if it was a canon product that caused the ruining of your camera. (Thats paraphrasing of what a piece of paper said that I got from canon)

You are probably right that using a 3rd party grip would not be covered by Canon if it did damage to your body -- however has there ever been a single report of a grip damaging a body?

Your example of a battery leak is not a good example since a physical leak of the battery would be contained to the grip. I'd me more concerned of some some weird short in the grip that flows up into the body.

There are many off brand grips. Some of them are terrible, but others are quite decent. You just have to be careful and avoid the garbage out there.

Very good advice. Now, could you tell us which is which? There is interest in using your system.
