Canon 24-105mm or 24-70mm for portrait

Neither. Get a good prime or three. Only zoom (of mine) that I might use would be the Zeiss 35-70.

primes for portraits is what i do, but if i had to choose between the zooms, i'd choose the 24-70. the bokeh is amazing.

The 24-105 gets alot of @#%& and its certainly not my first choice for portraits, but its not that bad....

24-105, 88mm, f/4....(if anything this is too sharp for a portrait )....

Why do you mention sharpness in portrait question ? For example absence of that funny circles coming out of the lady's head would be much more important

That sounds like great advice, but...
1) That lens cost a good deal more than the 2 he's mentioned.
2) You have a picture of Fabio, which negates any advice you give.

I didn't think I was replying to the OP, I thought I was giving advice to a thread jacker.

As for the Fabio thing, it really makes no difference as I'm always full of bad advice.

That's highlight bokeh and even my 100 f/2 would show this. The circular bokeh is nice and round and very decent for an f/4 lens of this focal length IMO.

Even the 135L would show circular highlight bokeh....

That's why it's important to look at the entire frame when composing. What's behind/infront of the subject can make or break a shot. You don't want things sticking out of the top or sides of people's heads... so move the subject or move the camera.

I don't know how many outdoor portraits I've been disappointed with because a necklace or some other small thing was just in the wrong place or was just wrong. In the rush, sometimes of getting a great expression, it's easy to forget or overlook.

After reading it, you can now settle for 24-105 for its versatility and IS which does help a lot for low-light *with* flash shots.

Can you tell a customer "Even 100/2 has it" ?
I am not sure about 100/2 but with both my 24-70 and 70-200/2.8 the highlights do not have that very defined edge, which puts them out of the point of attention.
On contrary 50/1.4 which is supposed to be have better bokeh because it is 'prime' and 'becasue it has a wider apperture' but in reality the bokeh on 50/1.4 can be beat in its ugliness only by reflector lenses.

The bottom line: sharpness i far not the most important feaure in a portrait lens.
