Through a little research here (and after buying the two mentioned products) I realized that my 1D2N does not have the raised plastic around the hotshoe as the 1D3 has. I bought a 580ex2 thinking I would have a complete weather sealed package, but as many of you probably know, there is a weak link. I know the camera will function properly in the elements without the flash but is there chance of a short or something if using in the elements with the flash. I imagine there will be since the under side of the flash could be exposed to moisture. What do you all think and do you have any experience with this? John

Well you could always just wrap the connection in electrical tape or something, that should protect it well enough. I wouldn't really worry about it, I've used sealed and unsealed cameras, with and without my completely unsealed 430EX in the rain before with no problems.

OPTECH Rainsleeve

The OPTECH Rainsleeves are cheap, compact to store (I usually have one in my holster case and another in my shooting vest pocket) and very light in weight. They also do a good job in protecting a camera from not only precipitation but from blowing grit, sand and dust.

There are models for cameras with and without flash.

I use the Kata E-702 for my camera. If you want to use a camera with a flash then you will probably be better off with the Kata E-705. http://www.adorama.com …html?searchinfo=kata+rain (external link)

I'm thinking about building up some material (most likely a form of epoxy) around the hotshoe on my Mark II to make it complete the seal with a 580EX II... If I do I'll post up quick instructions on what I used and how I did it. It's pretty simple, it's just a matter of getting off my butt and doing it. ;)

Thats a great idea. I didn't pay all the money for weather sealed goods to have to throw a plastic bag over it all if things get hairy. Let me know how that goes, post some pics when you get a chance. John

Neoprene foam would be a good (and removeable) choice
